A car company offers as an option a system that will detect a pedestrian in the path of the car, warn the driver, and brake the car if the driver does not respond. The option cost $2000. If someone buys the car, does the person have an ethical obligation to buy the optional system to protect pedestrians?
Although this is a great idea, I believe an individual should not be ethically obligated to purchase an optional system to protect pedestrians from being hit. This system will be made by man and will not be guaranteed to be efficient 100% of the time, which can still pose a risk. The key word here is “optional” and one should not be labeled as unethical if they make the decision not to purchase this system.
