Ethical Leadership Case Study: Chick-Fillet-A.

Chick-fillet-A, Inc. is the United States’ largest quick-service chicken restaurant chain, operating in more than 2,000 locations in 46 states (Chick-fil-A, 2018). Since its inception in 1946, the company’s corporate values have been grounded on the Cathy family’s religious beliefs, which have shaped business and ethical decisions. In 2012 however, Chick-fillet-A endured backlash and media controversy spurred by president and COO, Dan T. Cathy, who expressed conservative views towards family and marriage. In addition, while the company generously supported charitable causes, it had been selective in its choices, the most controversial of which was its’ contributions to anti-gay causes and groups. This resulted to backlash and accusations in discriminating against LGBT employees and/or customers. To this day, founding family’s personal views continue to shape company-wide practices. The objective of this paper is to discuss the issues faced by Chick-fillet-A, to present alternative strategies, and to recommend the best ethical leadership strategy to create an ethical, inclusive, and diverse business. As a consequence, this resulted to negative media publicity, adverse customer acceptance, and reduction of bottom line profit. While the company does not hold any history of discriminating against talent and customers, its actions have not been beneficial for its’ business environment. With the Cathy family’s leadership and moral values serving as the ethical compass of the company, it has failed to create a culture of value, and affirmation in support of diversity.
