The Cost of Greek Life
85% of male and female college students decide to join one Greek organization at least once in their college career (Hohman, 2015). Maura Hohman, the author of the article “What to Ask Before Joining Greek Life,” argues that incoming college students should realize how much time and money it will cost them before pledging a sorority or fraternity (2015). She depicts that approximately 75% of students join Greek Life in larger schools and about 20% join in smaller schools (2015). Fraternities and sororities cost between $20-$200 each month and that one member will donate 4-5 hours of their time a week whereas leaders are required to donate 15-20 hours a week for volunteering purposes (Homan, 2015). Hohman believes that most college freshmen are mentally unprepared for their college career and joining Greek Life will cause them more stress that they do not need (2015).
