Ethical Issues In Social Work

When I began this project I knew that it would be quite difficult because of the agency in which I am placed is the Division of Child and Family Services. Many people call it CPS. There is a lot of stigma surrounding CPS so conducting this project seemed difficult. There was a lot of questions on whether it would be ethical to ask clients if they wanted to register to vote. There was actually a joke of “Hey I am taking your kid, but do you want to register to vote.” Because of this uncertainty I had to get creative, or so I thought. Part of being an effective social worker is being able to meet many different competencies about practice. One such competency is 2.1.5 Advance human rights and social and economic justice. Under this competency a professional social worker/social work student advocates for the rights of all humans. The 15th amendment to the Constitution gives us as Americans the right to vote. This right to vote is often overlooked by many people. They simply do not think that their vote matters or that they can make a difference. Since voting is a human right social workers are tasked to make sure that those they work with have that right and know what to do with it. Since I want to be a professional social worker I wanted to make sure that I followed this competency and helped those I work with …show more content…
I also provided sample registration forms so the youth could see the forms that I printed from the Nevada Legislature website. I also created a quiz that was going to be given before and after the presentation to see if the youth’s knowledge about voting had changed given what I had taught them about voting. My presentation about voting included what people vote for such as laws, presidential candidates, electoral college, and even student council at school, I covered who can register to vote and who can vote, political parties, and briefly how to register to

In this section, I form my argument to explain that the Latino youth in Alameda County tends to come from a low-income and less-educated background, therefore longer hours of work or schooling, and inability to fathom California’s election process, which leads that group to unlikely turnout for elections. I formed my argument from my own extensive research and analysis within the particular area, group, and elections. It is an argument that depends on time, income, language, and the education background that results into a decline and unlikeness in voter turnout within the Latino youth in Alameda County. In the first subsection (3A), I argue that the Latino youth in Alameda County come from low-income backgrounds, which leads to long hours…

In a Democracy it is important to have frequent elections where all adults have the availability to participate. Until recent history the United States had mechanism put in place where some groups of society had multiple obstacles. Mechanisms like poll tax and literacy tests were given to reduce the number of minority voters. Individuals were even disfranchised and had no capability to vote. Devices and mechanisms able to break the burden of disfranchisement had first began in 1965 when a group of peaceful marchers traveled to Selma, Alabama, to the state capital of Montgomery to push and promote legislation for the creation of new voting rights legislation.…

When I think of the term ethical social work practice, it encompasses all the responsibilities’ of a social worker. These responsibilities include being respect, cultural sensitivity, competence, professional, flexible, and trustworthy just to name a few. Now, rating myself a seven seems realistic. First, as a military dependent, learning respect, flexibility, and culturally sensitivity helps to navigate the constantly changing settings. You have no choice, but to adapt and embrace transitions.…

In America, citizens are given the right to vote and elect officials into office. At the age of eighteen, young adults are allowed to register to vote and take part in elections. Not all citizens participate and decide to vote. When Americans decide to exclude themselves from voting, they initially are negatively impacting society. Thomas Patterson takes his stance on this when he wrote “The Vanishing Voter”.…

With a government elected by its citizens and that effects every aspect of our lives from schools to health care to homeland security, voting is an important right in our society. Because of this importance, everyone as a community needs to help increase voter turnout. They can start by urging the governor and Legislature to make voting a value we respect. They can continue to make recommendations to the Legislature in every cycle to improve voter registration and the states’ turnout performance. Another way to help voter turnout would by encouraging others to vote.…

I was fresh out of high school and all my teachers were enforcing in the students to register, claiming; “It’s our future”. I engaged into the political process by studying each candidate. I had acknowledged my voting rights and my opinion didn’t seem like it would go far or count in any sort. My second time voting, Election year 2016, I understand more and can give more insight as a Young Adult to new voters and what the cause and effect could be. I encourage them to express their own opinion through their vote and that it does count.…

The majority of the youth in California have not been active and turning out to vote, while the state and county elections greatly affects them. Elections and votes result into what the future of California will look like and its citizens, which is the youth’s and college student’s future as well. The question I aim to research and write on is, why not turnout to vote if they care about their personal future in California? There is a large population of youth and college students in California, while the voter turnout in elections continues to decline rather than increase. I aim to research this puzzling question and make an argument on this phenomenon.…

Although many values from the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics are applicable, the values that are most represented by this policy are the importance of human relationships, dignity and worth of the person, and social justice. The importance of human relationships states that social workers should strive to strengthen relationships between people to, “ promote, restore, maintain, and enhance the wellbeing of individuals, families, social groups, organizations, and communities” (NASW 2008). This is an essential value to this policy because it deals with undocumented individuals, a sensitive subject which every individual takes a different stand on and can create strained relationships in communities and between individuals…

As Kant argued, it is unethical to use someone as a means to an end. Thus, it is unethical that the government is ignoring issues that matter to youth, and not making moves to reverse the consequences arising from the decline in youth voter turnout. The government has the power to implement political education within school curriculums, yet chooses to keep it out of the classrooms (Chareka and Sears, 2006). Educating youth in politics is evidently not a priority of Canada’s political agenda.…

In the field of social work, we are faced with ethical dilemmas, more often than not. These dilemmas can come from conflicts with certain social work ethics and standards such as the right to self-determination, dual relationships, or confidentiality. A social worker can even face an ethical dilemma from a conflict of morals and values that they may have with their client. I will be examining an ethical dilemma that intersects both morals and values and confidentiality. Let’s say for example a social worker has an 18 year old client who is pregnant, still living with their parents and seeking an abortion.…

Imagine a life with no social workers. In this theory, would there be social justice? Social workers aim to assist people with the basic needs and values that are needed in life. This goal is fulfilled through the use of social work values. These values consist of “competence, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, service, and social justice” (NASW).…
