The role of a nursing consist of providing care for all individuals in need, to promote safety, and to advocate for the best practices in nursing. “ Nurses may act as advocates by helping others make informed decisions, by acting as an intermediary in the environment, or by directly intervening on behalf of others” Marquis & Houston (2015). Applying ethical frameworks to situations, assists with decision making. The ethical frameworks consist of utilitarian, deontological (rights based), deontological (duty based), and intuitionist. In this ethical dilemma with medication errors, the deontological (duty based) framework was applied. “Duty-based reasoning is ethical framework stating that some decisions must be made because there is a duty to do something or to refrain from doing something” Marquis & Houston (2015). As a nurse, it is my duty to ensure that patients’ safety and high quality of care are met. There are ethical principles that can be used as tools for ethical reasoning. Autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, paternalism, utility, justice, veracity, fidelity, and confidentiality makes of the ethical principles. The principles, veracity, nonmaleficence, and beneficence should have been demonstrated in the identified ethical issue. “Beneficence, actions are taken in an effort to promote good. Nomaleficence, actions are taken in an effort to avoid harm. Veracity, obligation to tell the truth” Marquis & Houston (2015). Unfortunately, the day shift nurses did not show veracity because of the false documentation of medication administration. Nonmaleficence wasn’t encouraged in the situation because of the nurses in ability to administer scheduled blood thinner medications. Additionally, the patients ended up with deep vein thromboses. So undoubtedly, harm was caused to those patients due to the imperfect actions of day shift nurses. With the ethical
