Hi Teika,

Thank you for your post this week concerning ethics in giving a child supplemental growth hormone treatment. As a parent, the desire for your child to be above the rest in height, stamina, and endurance is of utmost importance. Especially when he or she just doesn't seem to be growing as fast as the rest of the kids on the block. Now comes the concern: "why is my child shorter than his peers?" So, off to the doctor we go in hope of some miracle treatment that will make the child grow just as fast as the rest, and perhaps even taller. This is where the ethical dilemma begins; "When it comes to your child, what is to short?" Are doctors using human growth hormone treatment for more than just medical reasons or just for the purpose

The doctor should not prescribe GH to Sharon. GH should only be administered to those who have growth problems, and it is in the doctor’s best interest to do what is best for his patient. NHS advises that only the shortest 3% of the population is administered GH, and in Sharon’s case, her stature would be in the top 10%, meaning she does not have any growth problems. Even if she were in the shortest 3%, the doctor would still only give her the smallest dose possible that would produce reasonable results because of the potential side effects. Somatropin, a drug that contains GH and is administered to those with growth problems, has side effects such as headaches and joint problems, which 1 out of 10 patients experience.…

Personally, I believe that the potential to eradicate such devastating syndromes that are otherwise unpreventable, outweighs the loss of the other embryos. In a perfect world, embryos would not have to be sacrificed, but luckily, at the point when their genes are tested, they are only a conglomerate of cells, a zygote, with no resemblance to even the beginnings of a human being. So, when it comes to disease prevention and eradication, genetic modification should be pursued. However, many individuals believe that through using genetic engineering, it is okay to create the perfect child who has tall genes, smart genes, handsome genes, and so on. This is where I draw the line.…

A growth hormone is produced in the anterior pituitary gland and stimulates the bone and muscle growth needed for normal physical growth in children. In dwarfism, it produces too little growth hormone secretion. Achondroplasia is correlated with the endocrine system and it may be treated using hormonal therapy. If the cause is during the period of preceding puberty of growth hormone, supplemental growth hormone may be used to correct the abnormality. Growth-attenuation could be considered ethically acceptable because of its potential benefits for children with developmental disabilities. For example, stunting a child’s growth can help to keep the child more mobile. This allows the child to participate in more activities, which in turn helps him feel more included. It also allows the child to receive more care in the home, rather than from outside sources. Children who grow up in a home environment have more opportunities to interact and bond with their parents and siblings.…
