Ethical Dilemmas When Working At A Nursing Home

Decent Essays
As an LPN I make ethical and moral decisions every day. It is my job to give medications to

the patients at the nursing home that I work at. It is important for me to keep track of which

medications go to what patients and I also must make sure I give them the right amounts of the

meds at the right times. Even though I am comfortable with doing my job and try my best to

keep track of everything, sometimes the patients try to confuse me.

About a month ago I had to medicate a patient with multiple wounds. I had to give her diluted

I got back to the first patient’s room after about 4 hours. When I entered

change. I was not ordered to administer another morphine at that time and the order that I had for

that patient called for morphine to be administered every 8 hours. I knew that no matter what I

had to change her dressing and at the same time I did not want her to be in pain. I tried to explain

to the patient why I was not just able to give her the morphine as she requested but she got mad

and threatened to report me.

Right away I called the patient’s doctor to try and get a stat order but he did not pick up. Since

it was past the time for me to change her dressing I just decided to give her the morphine then I

did the dressing. Later, the doctor called me back and said don’t worry and that it was okay that I

gave her the

She did a jaw thrust maneuver and IV bolus normal saline was given that saved the patient. Her intensity of patient management in a critical care setting, and the practical application of pharmacology to modulate ever-changing physiologic states gave me a deeper appreciation about anesthesiology. What also impressed me was that she cared for him like a family member, giving constant emotional support making frequent visits to learn if his pain was controlled. The anesthesiologists all treated their patients as if they were family and I was reminded again of the importance placed on human values and truly caring for patients of the doctor-patient relationships between patients and Anesthesiologists was truly special to…

The aim of this report is to reflect upon about a critical incident that happened during my practice as an anaesthetic nurse trainee using the Gibbs reflective model (1988), which is known to be one of the best models that is better suited to healthcare settings. The following incident fits perfectly with the description made by Benner (1984) of a "critical incident" because I feel that my intervention and the other staff had a significant importance for the final outcome. A critical reflection framework is a learning method that promotes critical thinking about past actions with consequences in the future, highlighting behaviours, assumptions and views (Victoria State Government, 2007). In accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council…

Health professionals want to maintain a perfect image, therefore, admitting to an error be challenging. Nurses need to maintain a high standard of behavior on and off duty and take full responsibility for their action and claim accountability of any mistake made.
