The battle of Okinawa was considered one of most deadly fights in the Pacific during World War II. After the devastation of 150,000 combined casualties , Truman wanted to end the war without losing any more American lives and using the bomb was the only way to do that. As he said in a radio address on August 9, 1945, “We have used it in order to shorten the agony of war, in order to save the lives of thousands and thousands of young Americans.” Once Truman gave the go ahead to actually use the bomb, the next step was to decide where it should be dropped. After extensive planning, Hiroshima was chosen because of multiple reasons, including its military and industrial significance and highly concentrated population. Kyoto was selected to be the second target because it also fit all criteria, like that of Hiroshima. But once the pilots flew over the city, the unpleasant weather restricted their view so they were told to fly on to Nagasaki, where the second bomb would be dropped three days after
