Excuses are prettied up reasons and reasons are bull shit. Bernard Roth explains this in his book The Achievement Habit, a book based on building a strong foundation for a successful mindset. Throughout the chapter, ‘Reasons are Bullshit’, Roth capitalizes on the idea that everyone has the ability to be achievers; however, it is a trait that has to be learned. Roth effectively communicates his argument reasons are bull shit by using rhetorical appeals, ethical, emotional, and logical. With his experience, credibility came easy for Roth. Incorporating ethical appeal into his book, Roth was able to snag his readers attention. As part founder in the D-school and a professor at Stanford University, Mr. Bernard Roth has an honorary PHD from the University of Paris and a PHD from Columbia in mechanical engineering. He explains how he too is human and makes mistakes. He tells stories giving real life examples that all readers can connect to like, being late. Roth explains how he would consistently run late for meetings even when he tried to leave earlier. “It all came down to this: I did not see the meeting as a high priority in my life. It was that simple” (Roth 40). Many people can relate to this example because it happens every day. One can always find an excuse for why something happened or why things turned out the way they did. By using real life examples and telling personal stories, Roth proves to the readers that changing ones mindset is a skill that has to be learned. Another thing Roth does well is he doesn’t sugar coat anything.
