Ethical Dilemmas Essay

I believe as a member I would have been able to learn more about my trust issues. I am a gay man who has not been able always openly express myself. By listening to other gay men share about their feelings, thoughts, and worries of how people may react to them, shows me that I am not alone in these thoughts. I think I would be able to learn how to communicate more effectively without worrying about being judged. I would be able to realize how much I want people to know about me and why I may feel it necessary to keep myself closed off. As a leader, I would have been able to practice linking and helping members identify with each other. I can see how creating safety in the room may facilitate an open discussion about HIV/Aids and being a gay …show more content…
#4. What ethical issues do you need to be cognizant of concerning this segment of the group? During the transition period of the group I need to be aware of pushing a client too far too quickly. Because of the HIV/AIDS diagnosis, many members may be very hesitant about opening up. If I push them too quickly I could cause harm. The key issue for me is to create a forum whereas the group itself can grow with each member benefiting by being a part of it. Again, one of the main goals of this group is to allow members to feel supportive and maintain the dignity of the HIV infected individual. I also want to be aware of being authentic with these men, Honesty is essential for building trust along with being nonjudgmental. For example, I need to be able to express my concerns about those individuals having unprotected sex, but in the same frame not be judgmental of their behavior. Ethically and legally I need to be aware of what the client tells me under the umbrella of confidentiality, but not break the law. Ethically and legally a person with HIV/AIDS in the state of Florida must let their sexual partners know they are positive and practice safe sex. This law and confidentiality issue may be a test for trust within the group. I need to reiterate the confidentiality statement each group so there is no

Meeting with the Spectrum group today (an LGBTQ group of students on campus) was the essence of social advocacy that includes actions that would benefit individuals, groups, and the campus society itself. After speaking with Abby & Destinee from CICI, it is clear that separate LGBTQ groups need to work together and learn about each other. Hence, I am trying to be a liaison for the Prism group (LGBTQ faculty and staff), Spectrum, Student government LGBTQ senator, and the chairperson for the presence of LGBTQ on campus, along with Lucy Cross, to create a conversation between all the groups so they have more solidarity and a presence on campus. I look forward to see how this will work out. I believe that this will help challenge campus prejudice…

Throughout the 1900’s there was a lot of things built up against the United States, from WWII to the civil rights movements there was plenty for the citizens and the government to deal with. One important part of this time that people forget is the attacks and discrimination of different homosexual groups within this time. Thus it is believed that the U.S. should have gotten involved in stopping any persecution of homosexual individuals or groups in the 1900’s because, if they had done something then there might not be any of the difficulties and misunderstanding that there is today. One prime example of this was during WWII. Today when the topic of this horrible period is brought up the first thought is that of the thousands of Jews taken,…

The primary duty of a health care provider is to build a trustworthy relationship with their patients. This includes protecting the patient’s health information and concerns. In this case, confidentiality is breached due to both therapists, Dr. Knowles and Dr. Thomas, because of discussing their patients’ information without their consent. I believe that it is immoral for Therman to not take any precautions when he was engaging with Margo, since HIV is a big deal in the society. He should have taken responsibility and have told her beforehand.…

There is a need to dispel pejorative myths of clinical work with African Americans (Boyd-Franklin, 2003). African Americans make up approximately 13.3% of America (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 2015). Moreover, in the United States, African Americans make up a distinct cultural group, in which there is an aggregate of diversity. Characteristics such as, socioeconomic status, level of education, religious affiliation, acculturation, and geographical origins, should collectively be considered in any discussion with black individuals so as to avoid stereotyping (Boyd-Franklin, 2003). Additionally, intricacies of African Americans with respect to skin color (dark skinned versus light skinned) are repeatedly ignored but need to be recognized.…

Homosexuality has always been a controversial topic in the United States, especially last year when the law changed for same-sex individuals are now able to get married. I attended a Catholic private school in middle school, in which we learned about God and the Bible. We were taught that people could be gay but that they could not act upon it, but it was best not to be gay because that not what God intended us to be. The idea of being gay was so abstract, I always wonder if a person was born that way or choose to be that way. I remember having my first experience of close friends coming out to me as a lesbian.…

The client is pushing her husband away by her need to watch his every move and wondering if he is constantly cheating on her. In the client’s case, resistance is serving a purpose of impeding the uncovering of the problem and “once a conflict is reactivated in psychotherapy, they interfere with the renunciation of unconscious wishes and fantasies associated with the conflict” (Manetta, Gentille, & Gillig, 2011).
