Surrogate Mother Empowerment

Some women become infertile and cannot conceive babies with their bodies, but other women do not have time to become pregnant and/or do not want to ruin their bodies carrying a child. More commonly, women hire surrogate mothers to carry their baby simply because how time consuming pregnancy can seem. “A fertility doctor, Lori Arnold, in San Diego says, ‘More women are having surrogacy because they do not want to upset their work life, or have their bodies go through such a change’” (Sanghani). A woman might not believe they have time for pregnancy due to many reasons including requesting long maternity leave or time off work for doctors appointments, along with working long work weeks up to 50 hours, possibly having a single household income and unable to afford sick days. Not only can a woman be too busy to become pregnant, but women also do not want to “ruin” their bodies. “The sense of empowerment and self-worth is one of the greatest rewards surrogate mothers experience” (Ali et al 45). Some women enjoy the experience of pregnancy causing them to enter into the surrogate job market. Many women say they feel most beautiful when they are pregnant, as if they glow. When a woman becomes content with the amount of children she bears, but misses being pregnant, she can consider becoming a surrogate mother. She enjoys the transformation her body possesses as the baby develops in the womb. Although she cannot feel an emotional attachment to the baby inside, she still takes joy in the bond between her body and the baby feeding from her. Not only does she rejoice in the relationship between her body and the baby, but she also enjoys the appearance and tactile sense of the baby
