Ethical Decision-Making Essay An ethical decision is used through many businesses, schools, and even around families. Ethical decisions are “theories that represent the viewpoints from which individuals seek guidance to make decisions.” (Larry Chonko) For example, two classmates Greg and Natalie have enjoyed class time together since freshmen year but are not friends. It is their senior year now, and it is their last class together before graduating. In class, Greg invites Natalie to their group to work on a project for class. After awhile Greg notices that Natalie is not putting her full effort in her part of the work. In result of this Greg and other group members have to spend extra time on the project to redo Natalie’s work. The final presentation is due and everyone presents. It is evaluating time, Greg gives every group member a high grade but when it comes to Natalie he is unsure. He does not want to give her a bad grade because it is their last class before they graduate and can drop her GPA. Everyones’ ethical decisions are different because many people are either kind hearted or inconsiderate. Utilitarian approach “ deals with the good and the bad consequences.” (Claire Andre etc.) The Utilitarian approach performs in this situation because Greg finds himself in awkward conclusion with Natalie. He invites her into his group and then realizes that she is not putting enough effort into her work. It also indulges in the end where Greg has to decide whether to give Natalie a passing or failing grade. In this theory the result can be simple and just give her an “F” for her work because she did not work as hard as the other group members.
