Ethical climates are the level of ethics by which an organization and its leaders communicate, embrace, and enforce (Manning & Curtis, 2015, p. 143). It is essential for the leaders to lead by example, both with words and actions. These guidelines work best when they are clearly stated and communicated and applied equally across the board to all. “There are three ethical climates in dealing with moral dilemmas: (1) profit-maximizing; (2) trusteeship; or (3) quality-of-life management” (Manning & Curtis, 2015, p. 143). Each of these climates must address their stance regarding different ethical dimensions. Organizations code of ethics should cover rules for government, employee, business, consumer, community and environment relations, as well as standards for goods and services (Manning & Curtis, 2015, p. 141). …show more content…
Lawrence Kohlberg applies three levels of morality to the three ethical climates (Manning & Curtis, 2015). A profit-maximizing ethical climate is a level I and displays pre-conventional morality. After reviewing the responses for a profit-maximizing organization to different ethical dimensions, I would say working in this ethical climate would be scary. This type of organization is not concerned with their employees or anything else for that matter. As an employee, you would not be heard or considered, if it comes to hindering profits.
