When you hear the word Plastic Surgery, many thoughts and emotions go through your brain. There are some people who are so opposed to it because they don’t have all the facts as to what it is. Plastic Surgery has two branches, cosmetic surgery and reconstructive plastic surgery. Cosmetic surgery main goal is to improve the anesthetic appearance of a person and reconstruction surgery is to help improve the function and try to ensure normal appearance. However normal appearance is not always applicable. In the US we don’t separate the difference in reconstructive and cosmetic which causes controversy.

You have some people born without their nose working, there are some that may be born with a cleft palate, or even someone in a bad accident that may require plastic surgery to gain the ability to use a body part correctly not just to make them look normal, but to enhance their quality of life.
According to the Indian Journal of Plastic Surgery there has been a rapid growth in general and aesthetic surgery in the past decade. This has caused a rise in the ethical confusion among peers and colleagues (Gupta, 2012). Because of the rise of plastic surgery, this means more malpractice law suits due to more patients undergoing procedures they may not be happy with.
The ASAPS member have prohibited and deemed some practices unethical. They are the ones who write and tell the specific standards I am expected to withhold in my career choice. I will face a dilemma on an occasion that I may or may not agree with but my number on priority is to treat each patient with the same respect as I would my own family and friends. It is not my place to agree or disagree with what they procedure they are choosing to have. That is between them and their surgeon. As a Surgical technologist it is my sincere hope to treat my patients with dignity and respect and to provide the very best care I possibly can to them. That does not mean I believe that all plastic surgery is the best option for a patient. I believe God made us who he intended for us to be and that he gave surgeons the knowledge to practice medicine to those in need. Take for instance a baby with a cleft palate. I believe God allowed that baby to be born like that to serve a purpose we may never know. It may be to get the mother’s life right, the father’s life right or maybe for even the surgeon or surgical technologist need to learn a valuable lesson from this child.
