Ethanol Experiment

Improved Essays
The alcohol Ethanol a chemical compound that is made up of hydrogen, carbon and oxygen and is produced by a fermentation process, this means that this type of alcohol is renewable, although there are non-renewable ways in which to produce this type of alcohol. This alcohol is often mixed into materials such as gasoline, this helps to allow it to be used as a fuel, and help preserve non-renewable materials that could be put to use in more important ways. The mixture of this is often only at a concentration of 5-10% ethanol and this being used in fuel is a very common occurrence within the USA.
In regards to fuel, ethanol is typically deemed as a ‘good fuel’ due to the renewable factor, another factor within determining the quality of a fuel is the length of the burn, a good fuel will emit an increased length of combustion.

For example, I believe that methane will have a better burning rate than butane, and this is because the butane has bigger molecules than butane. This is because more energy is required in order to break apart the smaller molecules, the larger the carbon chain the easier it is to break it apart, this indicates that there will be more energy produced in the process of a chemical breakdown. Therefore I believe that the alcohol with the longest chain of atoms will be the first to fully combust when subjected to

Known as the human species oldest recreational drug, Ethanol is a colorless, flammable liquid, with a distinct smell, and burns with a blue flame. It has the chemical formula of CH3CH2OH (it's molecular formula) or C2H6O (it's empirical formula), that can also be abbreviated using chemistry notation as EtOH. It has a melting point at -173.2°F , and a boiling point at 173.1°F. Ethanol has many handy uses around the world, in many different places.…

Methods There are many important factors to any experiment, including the materials. To continue, the quantity of materials for this experiment varies from a refrigerator to tweezers, but they all need to be included for the best results. First, the larger materials needed to complete the experiment are refrigerator, freezer, stove, one ice box, one scale which could be large or small, one blender, one cooking pot, one large jar or cup, and at least 400 milliliters of distilled water. Next, the smaller supplies begin with at least five coffee filters, one pair of scissors, enough ice cubes to fill the ice box and have at least eight left over, one potato peeler, at least two potatoes, one knife, one gallon plastic bag, one clean bowl or wax…

It is typically found in the fuel type E10 (10% ethanol, 90% gasoline) (afdc.energy.gov). E85 is typically the highest ethanol fuel mixture globally with 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline, although this fuel is very hard to find (wikipedia.org). The alcohol is removed by distillation and is concentrated to about 96% strength. At this stage, the alcohol can be dehydrated to remove excess water giving anhydrous ethanol. As it will be used for fuel, the law requires this alcohol be denatured to make it unfit for human consumption. Many ethanol factories collect the co2 produced and sell it to other industries where it…

If the fuel reaches its ignition temperature during compression, it will then auto-ignite at the wrong time. This will then cause loss of power and damage to the engine. There as fuels such as heptane that can ignite under very little compression, however, octane tends to handle compression extremely well. The higher the compression a car’s motor can produce in the cylinders, the greater the power it can get out of each stroke of the piston. This makes it necessary to have fuels the can handle higher compression without auto-igniting.…
