This book attacked puritan customs in a very harsh sense. It even compared the Puritan people to crustaceans. This angered many people, even the progressive New-English settlers. This resulted in the book being banned. This made the book likely the first banned book in the United States. This book was called the “New English Canaan.”(Bush, “The Little Known History Of Book Banning In The United States”). Similar to book banning itself, the fight it against isn't new either. This leads us to the origins of banned books week. One success in the fight against book banning was the Island Trees School District v. Pico case. In this case, the Supreme Court ruled that schools couldn’t ban books based on content alone. The stand against banned books started when the organizers for the American Booksellers Association(ABA) BookExpo America trade show in Anaheim, California, created a plan to bring the issue of banned books to the attention of more people. They made a display of about 500 books locked in large cages with warning signs saying that people find these books to be dangerous. The display sparked ideas within the ABA. The reason for that is because in the time that the book is set in the racial slur used in the book was often used. (Lee, “To Kill A Mockingbird”) One of the main arguments for banning books is that the content of the book may not be suitable for its intended audience. This means that a book's target audience may be too young for the content of the book. Like the book The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck which was banned for “Vulgar Language” as it is put by Kansas City, MO. (“Banned & Challenged Classics.”) One reason for children reading banned books provided by Common Sense Media is that the controversy of today could become the futures classics. One more reason is that the book is much more the controversial language it contains.
