This book attacked puritan customs in a very harsh sense. It even compared the Puritan people to crustaceans. This angered many people, even the progressive New-English settlers. This resulted in the book being banned. This made the book likely the first banned book in the United States. This book was called the “New English Canaan.”(Bush, “The Little Known History Of Book Banning In The United States”). Similar to book banning itself, the fight it against isn't new either. This leads us to the origins of banned books week. One success in the fight against book banning was the Island Trees School District v. Pico case. In this case, the Supreme Court ruled that schools couldn’t ban books based on content alone. The stand against banned books started when the organizers for the American Booksellers Association(ABA) BookExpo America trade show in Anaheim, California, created a plan to bring the issue of banned books to the attention of more people. They made a display of about 500 books locked in large cages with warning signs saying that people find these books to be dangerous. The display sparked ideas within the ABA. In fact, Mark Twain, a great American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer does not think that books should be censored: “Censorship is telling a man he can’t have a steak just because a baby can’t chew it.” This shows that censoring a book is similar in this hypothetical by telling a person they can not read a book because other people can not handle to. This portrays that censoring books is blown out of proportion because one person might not be able to manage the maturity it takes to read the book, but it does not mean it should be banned for everyone else to be allowed to read it. The same idea is also represented by Oscar Wilde, author of The Picture of Dorian Gray, when he articulates that, “The books that the world calls immoral are the books that show the world its own shame.” This shows that when the world censors a book, it goes to show that they are to be put to shame for taking away ideas and morals into the world for it’s learning.…

Fortunately, for every group pushing for bans on literature, there are organizations that fight for this freedom. One such organization is the American Civil Liberties Union. In the year 2000, when discussing the topic of book banning, the organization stated that, “Permitting restraints on literature sets the stage for attacks on all expression that is artistically or politically controversial or that portrays unpleasant realities of life” (American Civil Liberties Union). It’s not as if middle or high school students are incapable of understanding and comprehending dark or more adult subject matter.…
