Zeena has been noticing something is up between Ethan and Mattie ever since she moved into the house. When Zeena is away in Bettsbridge, Mattie took one of her favorite china dishes, her red pickle dish to make the dinner table “pretty.” Shortly after doing so, the dish gets knocked over and gets broken and when Zeena comes home and finds it broken, Mattie ends up telling Zeena what actually happen: "It wasn't Ethan's fault, Zeena! The cat did break the dish; but I got it down from the china-closet, and I'm the one to blame for its getting broken." (48) This is kinda the turning point in their relationship because this really makes Zeena mad and then Zeena says “ "You're a bad girl, Mattie Silver. . . and now you've took from me the one I cared for most of all—" (48) Zeena now wants Mattie out right away and now doesn’t trust her. The hate within the two characters resembles realism because even people in life get mad at others. The feelings and emotions are the same as it is in the real world. Their feelings and emotions eventually pass and people tend to fogive overtime.Later in the book, Zeena, in a way, forgives Mattie when the “smash-up” happens. Zeena takes Mattie into her house and cared for her while she was hurt and ill.
