Set in the bleak winter landscape of New England, Ethan the main character in Ethan Frome faces many challenges to be with the one who he truly loves. Frome Is trapped within himself when Mattie moves in to take care of Zeena, which he falls in love with Mattie and falls out of love with his wife. Ethan is faced with a challenge when it comes to loving another women and how it is going to be viewed by society. Ethan shows the distances he is willing to go to be with Mattie and take care of his deeply ill/disable wife. Towards the end, it is ironic when Zeena has to take care of Mattie and Ethan.
As an illustration of Ethan who is poor and it is assumed that he did not want to live his life as a lonely man. Ethan ends up finding Zeena, who he later marries. As a reader one does not know how they came to know each other, nor know how she became ill/disable. Furthermore, Ethan does not seem to be happy when he is around Zeena, it seems that he is miserable taking care of her. Soon after Mattie comes to live with Zeena and Ethan, Ethan starts to truly find happiness and starts to fall in love with Mattie. It starts when Ethan and Mattie are walking home late at night, which they happened to stroll through the fields under the clear star filled sky, where they had a clearly view of Ethan’s sawmill.
