Ethan Anderson: A Short Story

Improved Essays
It was said that desk duty could be the worst task an officer could endure and for officer Ethan Anderson, there was no exception. He disliked being stuck indoors when he could be out on the street helping or doing something useful, anything other than doing paperwork would have been great. However, as a rookie he had to pay his dues and right now, that meant shutting up and doing these uneventful jobs.

From his desk, he looked up and glanced at the clock, to his dismay he had only been sitting at his desk for two hours, though it felt like longer in his bored state. Breathing in deep he attempted to once again focus on the large amount of paperwork before him. Touching his pen to paper, he began to write his report which detailed a strung out drug addict who was just brought in an hour before. It was Ethan who had booked the woman and unfortunately, that was the extent of his excitement for the day, if one could call it that - At one point during the long booking process she had attempted to spit on him, though thankfully she missed. He should have been mad but instead he felt bad for the woman.

"What's up?" Ethan asked once the older cop was near enough to hear. Swarek took a seat on the edge of his desk and looked down at the report Ethan had been filling out seconds before. "Rookie mistake kid." he said, arching a brow at the same time, he must have looked confused because Swarek was quick to elaborate. "Too much detail. No one needs to know the insignificant facts. All you need to write are the important details and be done with it, you keep focusing on the small stuff and you're gonna be here all night. Do yourself a favor and get through paperwork as fast as you

The brisk trek through rough wilderness had taken its toll on the portly fog of a man. Now wheezing, he bowed low to prop up his arching frame on a knee high boulder on the side of the path. He watched with passive intrigue as giant sweat droplets fell to earth. Each one making a crater in the previously undisturbed soil carpeting the seldom used trail leading up to the Burbank overlook. He wanted nothing more than to feel the wind blow across his puffy face when he got to the top.…

Edith Wharton’s Ethan Frome is structured specifically to create an aura of suspense and thrill. The prologue acts to give a fleeting insight to the mysterious character of Ethan Frome, but intentionally neglects to offer an explanation as to why he is in his current condition, thus keeping the audience on their toes. Such strategies used by Wharton create an overall effect of mystery and confusion until the very end. The switch of point of view to third person omniscient puts readers in a front row view of the lives of Ethan, Mattie, and Zeena, but prohibits them from knowing the characters’ true thoughts, keeping the level of suspense high. Wharton establishes a sorrowful mood in the novella by paralleling the weather with Ethan’s feelings and situation.…
