“Ethan Allen, a farmer, businessman, land speculator, philosopher, writer, lay theologian, and American Revolutionary War patriot, hero, and politician. (n.d. 2015)” It’s apparent that Ethan Allen was a very successful, busy and multi-talented man. Made most successful by creating the Green Mountain boys and the capture of fort Ticonderoga in the Revolutionary war, Ethan Allen was an essential part in declaring our independence from Great Britain.
Ethan Allen was born on January 21, 1738 in Litchfield, Connecticut. He was the first born child of Joseph and Mary Baker Allen, both of English and Puritan descent. The family moved to the town of Cornwall, where Allen learned many outdoor skills. He had goals of gaining admission to Yale College, but after his father’s death, had to end his schooling. Allen volunteered for militia service, but did not last long after the French had captured Fort William Henry. Although the French and Indian war lasted the next several years, he did not participate in any further military activities. On May 2, 1775 Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys met up with a group of soldiers from Massachusetts and Connecticut in Bennington. Allen and the other officials planned their attack on Ticonderoga for May 10. Everyone voted, and Allen was dubbed in charge of the attack. (Ethan Allen, 2015). On May 10, the army led by Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold loaded into the boats and headed across the lake to Fort Ticonderoga. “Only 83 soldiers made it over before Allen and Arnold decided to attack for fear that dawn would take away their cover soon. As soon as the attack took place, Ethan headed straight for the Captain's quarters. (Ethan Allen, 2015)” The Captain came out fully clothed and surrendered his army to the Continental
