What is the point of this assignment? I am not sure. The actual assignment is to interview a person belong do a different culture than I belong to. Ok I can do that. Why am I interviewing them? The assignment says to get to know people of cultures other than my own. Ok cool. Growing up in California allowed me to grow up around a rainbow of people and my work for the City of Phoenix has turned that rainbow into the proverbial “double rainbow.” My favorite uncle is Mexican, his children, my cousins are mixed race; at work I have and still work with several African-Americans, as well as Hispanic-Americans, even Asian-Americans. I call them all my friends and when looking for someone to interview I saw them as just Americans, people of the same culture as I am. Does that mean I know what it is like to grow up black or Mexican or even Japanese in America? Not in the slightest. And that more than anything is what I think the point of this assignment really is. Not to figure out how to talk to someone different than you; but to figure out who that person actually is and that, after some fits and starts is what I set out to do here.
The subject for my interview is one of my before listed co-workers, Mr. Cynthia McDuffey. She is an African-American who, like I said before, hadn’t even considered asking to interview because I did not see her as being different

As a group that is just as American as my culture, African Americans and white Americans like the same foods. Neither one of our groups really have something a grocery store would categorize as “ethnic” food. One thing the interviewer and the interviewee have strongly in common is that we love bar-be-que. I think it’s wonderful when all cultures can have something that they have in common that they love. I left it at just bar-be-que because if I asked which type (Kansas City, Texas, Tennessee, Carolina, etc.) of bar-be-que we might have a

I first started looking for a summer internship during the spring 2015 school semester. I used various outlets and applied to many jobs in Long Island, NY and in Albany, NY. I found that using career websites, such as CareerSaint or Indeed.com, did not result in me finding much because I would send out my resume, and not really know who my resume went to so I could not follow up with the company if I wanted to. So, I started researching online, mainly using search engines such as Google.com, companies that I thought would be a good fit for me. My major is Actuarial Science, however I am still looking at working in different areas in business in order to find something that I really enjoy doing and can see myself doing as a career for the rest of my life.…

During the second semester of my junior in high school, I collaborated with two other biology students to study for our International Baccalaureate exams in May. I am not trying to say that my teacher was a terrible teacher but the teacher was retiring the following year and did not worry too much about our success in the exams. My two classmates and I decided to form a study group. We each would study and try our hardest to understand particular chapters and then share the chapters with the other two. By going this route, we were able to maximize our knowledge intake on the year and a half biology syllabus which we did not have time for.…

I’ve usually learned in hard way because frankly, I love to challenge myself to expand my personal capacity. Although I had already talked to one of my classmates about having interview with her as a Caucasian woman, I decided to do it with my cousin’s friend, Jacob, who I met in my place for the first time during Thanksgiving holidays. Interviewing Jacob about his interactions with other cultures has made me realize that I have a lot to learn about the meaning of the privilege and holding it. Jacob was a 24-year-old Caucasian, who lived in Missouri his entire life. Though he was visiting California for the second time in his life, he was in a Persian house for the first time.…

Introduction I originally was going to interview a girl from Singapore for this paper, but I had to go back home and I was not able to talk with her after all. So while I was back in my home town I interviewed a girl I went to school with, and for the sake of the paper I am going to refer to her as Sally. Before interviewing Sally I knew how our physical appearances differed, but I didn’t realize how culturally different we were. Understanding Others Sally is different from me in number of ways, but some of our differences are she is a mother, she refers to herself as a Christian, she still lives in the town she grew up in, and she has a job.…

The Beautiful Struggle, a memoir, explores the life of an African American living in west Baltimore, an area known for its poverty and crime. Ta-Nehisi Coates, the author, illustrates the struggle black people encounter regarding racism and living in a world dominated by white people. The Beautiful Struggle raises questions regarding inclusion and diversity of different ethnicities and cultures while also exposing us to a life that we are not familiar with. To many people, familiarity brings comfort and isolation brings fear. Therefore, we should carefully consider the question of how far do we have to go achieve social justice and equal protection.…

As people look at others around them and guess what cultural background they come from without knowing, in most cases, they are either slightly off or on the opposite end of the spectrum. Most everyone has been guilty by their assumptions of race or ethnicity at some point. When interviewing John Killingbeck, a twenty-year-old student at SIUe, I learned that he has background that surprised and interested me immediately. I recently met John and was aware that he was Latino, but I did not know enough of his unique cultural background. He was born and raised a United States citizen.…

The individual that I chose for my interview is a 37 year old male who was born and raised in Germany, but presently resides in northern Indiana. He relocated to the United States for work-related reasons. His name is Michael Drue and he is, at this time, married to my first cousin Krisha, a native English speaker, having been born in the United States. I chose Michael as the person of interest for my intercultural interview not only because he is speaks English as a second language, but also because of the point of view he was able to give me regarding the difficulties that language and cultural barriers may present in an interpersonal relationship. When I enquired at what age he was when he started to learn English as his second language,…

When interviewing a child it is necessary to ask appropriate questions that are age appropriate for the child.
