Etching Painting Analysis

Growing up, I remember always looking out the car window and staring at all the tall buildings. I’ve always been fascinated by the little things in life. This artwork instantly reminded me of how I looked at buildings myself as a child. I wondered if Hugh Mackenzie and I had something in common. When I came across this painting I actually stopped and stared, acknowledged and appreciated the hard work of etching. In pure etching, a metal (usually copper, zinc or steel) plate is covered with a waxy ground which is resistant to acid. The artist then scratches off the ground with a pointed etching needle where he or she wants a line to appear in the finished piece, so exposing the bare metal. Etching is some tedious work, and was accomplished greatly.

I ponder that the artist created the artwork to give the audience a mystical feeling and to question them on “how was this artist influenced to create this Print”?, as well as the meaning and symbol behind this. Another question which may be evoked is “Was there a true story or place where this image occurred in “Margaret Prestons” life? In my opinion other people may react to this artwork as a place of relaxment where maybe Margaret Preston has visited. This may have been her favourite hide out or place to visit. As I examine this artwork I envisage it as an appearance during the 80’s due to the matured paint/colour fading away.…

Throughout ancient Egyptian history, art and culture remained constant to support the idea of “order over chaos.” However, in the mid-14th century BCE a revolution occurred in Egyptian society, culture, and religion, consequently causing a brief transformation in Egyptian art. These changes can be detected in the Relief of Princess with an Earring. This sculpture was made in the 18th Dynasty (1353-1336 BCE), during the reign of Akhenaten. Although only a portion of the limestone relief is displayed in the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archeology, the sculpture still demonstrates the attributes that are found in art from Amarna Period.…

Joan Mitchell’s Chamonix 1962 painting appears to be a mess at first glance; paint violently pushed across canvas, no focal point and seemingly just no point to this piece. However, by giving a name to this abstract mess, we are able to begin to use our imagination to begin to see shapes take form to see that Mitchell has made an abstraction of a French mountain and it is our job as a viewer to use our minds to make a story of her canvas. Mitchell’s 200 by 217.2cm canvas overtakes your vision the second you step in front of it. As you stare at all the paint splattered in the middle of the painting, you begin to notice that it’s not just a mess of paint. Mitchell didn’t do a ‘Jackson Pollock’ and slap paint on the canvas.…

Artwork offers a visual insight into the culture in the Americas during the time of colonization. The casta paintings provide the best evidence to represent the melting pot of human cultures in the Americas during the early days of settlement. The 15th panel in the 1763 Caste Painting Series by Miguel Cabrera; De Mestizo y d 'India is an oil on canvas painting which depicts a mixed race family; a Mestizo man, an Indian woman and their two children, whom the caste system labels as “Coyotes”. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the Spanish word “mestizo” refers to a man of European and Native American origin. Before one can write about a political cartoon which greatly depicts two Congressman, Matthew Lyon of Vermont, and Roger Griswold of Connecticut, fighting on the floor of Congress in 1798, one needs to know what a political comic or cartoon is. A brief definition would do: Political cartoons are defined as illustrations or comic strips containing a political or social message that usually relates to current events or personalities. Now with that out of the way, we may proceed. Generally, when it comes to a political cartoon there are a few reasons why one would decide to draw it in the first place. What was the artist trying to portray, what kind of message was he trying to send, what target audience was he trying to reach?…

[2] Five years after hooks’ published her essay, artist Kara Walker’s etching “Untitled (John Brown)” expands the essay’s ideas to apply to more mediums than simply cinema. Walker’s piece is a physical embodiment of the very skepticism hooks has theorized. The seemingly unfinished sketch is her take on the moment when radical white abolitionist John Brown is being led to his execution for leading the infamous Harper’s Ferry raid. A famous lithograph that was distributed throughout the nation during the early abolitionist movement was composed by Currier and Ives and illustrates Brown as a hero kissing a baby a grateful mother presents to him (Oh). Walker chooses instead to turn this idea on its head and imagines a powerless Brown clad in a…

    Robert Motherwell

The beautifully wise words of an American painter, Robert Motherwell, could not have described abstract art any better I strongly believe. He intricately and sophisticatedly describes the breath-taking style of abstract art as follows, “The function of abstraction is to get rid of a lot of reality. You start with as much richness as you want, and subtract, and then you arrive at the residue of essences that you’re interested in.” This description really allows the reader to visualize the artist at the canvas, slapping the paint on and then every so carefully stripping away the perfect amount to acquire the goal and portray the image in their brains. I love the amount of visualization Motherwell allows, and encourages the viewer to experience.…

This paper will discuss eight different images from eight different locations based on their themes as well as photographs and images from Exhibition 100+ and Exhibition American Modernism. The different artwork for discussion in the paper comes from China, Italy, and Cyprus. The eight artworks from the Minneapolis Institute of Arts were quite fascinating and poignant for me in terms of their richness in history, culture, religion, and nature. Every piece that I picked held a special message and an emblem of information that put into perspective that I learned in class.…

The main artistic device in this sketchy, almost primitive composition is the line: Munch fully exploits the possibilities of this important tool, putting it to painterly, as well as psychological (expressionist) effect. Color plays a no less important, but subordinate role (the black and white lithograph exemplifies how the painting retains its punch even after being discolored). Munch often used proofs of his lithographs and woodcuts as the foundation for drawings, embellishing them with watercolor and gouache to further accentuate their symbolic content. The artist’s search for graphic means to refine key pictorial themes eventually led him to novel combinations of printmaking techniques in a single work. Munch created prints as lithographs…

Describe the Work Hall of Bulls is a beautiful Upper-Paleolithic cave painting made in ca. 15,000 B.C. The painting is scaled larger than life size standing 25 feet tall and 62 feet wide; and, it resides inside of a cave on a coarse, rigid, and uneven rock wall. The cave is located in a small geographical area called Lascaux located in Dordogne France. Furthermore, there is no known artist for the Hall of Bulls, because of historical ignorance and the age of the painting; however, archaeological insight shows that the Magdalenian race, a race of post-modern humans made all of the Paleolithic paintings in Lascaux (Lascaux Paintings video).…
