When I finally got my own job and started paying for my own things, it was much easier to understand how much it took to be fiscally responsible. I have my grandmother to thank for instilling this discipline; we were taught very early to appreciate the smallest things because you really don’t know how long it’ll last. Now all I can think about is those hungry children in Africa having to travel a long distance to get a meal for their families; they have to worry every day if they’ll be poisoned by drinking dirty water or fall prey to something far worse. I often struggle with my previous outlook on life; growing up, I never realized how privileged I was just to have a bed to sleep on, dinner to eat, clothes to wear, shoes to run in. Some people have it so bad to the point they just stop trying.
I appreciate and love my grandma so much for always making us eat all the food off our plates, drink all our drinks, and most importantly, pray before eating to acknowledge God for his provision. I love her for always disciplining us for not getting along with each other. It is so important to have that bond with family so that you can grow better as a person and eventually spread that love and compassion to those outside of your
