CHAPTER 5
PROPERTIES OF MAHUA METHYL ESTER AND THEIR BLENDS WITH DIESEL
5.1 INTRODUCTION In this work, characteristic fuel properties of mixture of Mahua methyl ester and their blends with diesel in the proportions of 10:90, 25:75, 50:50, 75:25 and 100:0 respectively were studied. The characteristics fuel properties of Mahua methyl ester blends were found to be those of diesel oil.
5.2 MATERIAL AND METHODS The Mahua oil methyl ester was prepared by using three stage transesterification processes because their FFA level is more than 1%. In the first step, esterification reaction was carried out by adding 15 ml methanol to 100 ml Mahua oil and 0.5ml H2SO4. This reaction period was carried at temperature range between 550c to 600 c with reaction

Mahua oil has more specific gravity 0.920 which is reduced to 0.870 after transesterification. Specific gravity of B25 is very close to the diesel oil which is 1.032 times higher than diesel oil. B100 has s g of 0.894 which is 1.098 times more than that diesel oil. Figure 5.2 indicates that specific gravity increases with the increase in % of biodiesel blend. 5.4.3 Flash point Table 5.1 shows that the flash point of Mahua oil, diesel oil, biodiesel. Flash point of B10 is 700C. Flash point of B25 is 760C. Figure 5.3 shows the flash point increases with the increase in % of biodiesel in the blend. Figure 5.3 Flash points of Mahua oil, biodiesel, and its blends
5.4.4 Fire point Table 5.1 shows that the fire point of Mahua oil, diesel oil, biodiesel. Fire point of B10 is 770C. Fire point of B25 is 800C. Figure 5.3 shows the fire point increases with the increase in % of biodiesel in the blend.

Figure 8. shows the response of the carbon chain atoms triglycerides to an infrared radiance, which the fuel with the catalyst responds faster to the transmitted heat is around 31% T, and the fuel without the catalyst is around 40% T. These results indicated that the atom's bond in triglyceride chain is weakened, the viscosity decreases and the fuel readily absorb heat. Moreover, the highest temperatures achieved (see fig 3) and the shorter burnout time (see fig 6) prove that the fuel with the catalyst has a great…

Abstract: The Grignard reaction was successfully accomplished. An amount of 1.20 ml of 2-methyl-2-pentanol was collected, and 9.60% yield was calculated based on the theoretical yield. Despite the low amount of 2-methyl-2-pentanol, its identity was confirmed by comparing the experimental refractive index and infrared spectrum to the literature refractive index and infrared spectrum of 2-methyl-2-pentanol. Statement and purpose The purpose of this experiment is to synthesize a specific alcohol by using the Grignard reaction.…

CONCLUSION From this experiment, the properties of hexane, cyclohexene and toluene have been identified. Cyclohexene is the most reactive as it is an unsaturated compound that contains carbon-carbon double bond compared to toluene and hexane. Toluene is less reactive due to their aromaticity while hexane was a saturated hydrocarbon that only contain carbon-carbon single bond. Based on the result, unknown A believed to be a saturated hydrocarbon while unknown B was an unsaturated hydrocarbon.…

CONTENTS RESEARCH QUESTION How does the length of carbon chains, specifically those related to alkanols, namely ethanol 1- propanol and 1- butanol, affect the heat of combustion? AIM To investigate how the length of carbon chains affect the heat of combustion and enthalpy, in order to determine which fuel would be the safest and most efficient to take on a camping trip. HYPOTHESIS If the number of carbon atoms in an alkanol is increased, then the alkanol containing the longest carbon chain will have a higher heat of combustion, because as there are more carbon atoms, more energy will be released as a result of the breaking of the covalent bonding and the forming of bonding as the final product. In both data sets the control group had the highest germination percentage with an average of 24 out of 25 seeds germinated. The relationship of the number of seeds germinated and amount of motor oil is indirect, as the amount of motor oil increases the number of seeds germinated decreases. These findings are similar to other researchers’ works like B.U. Olayinka and O.O. Arinde’s work on Effects of Spent Engine Oil on Germination and Seedling Growth of Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.). Their findings supported the idea that Groundnuts were affected in germination as well as adult plants by motor oil (Olayinka). This indirect relationship could be caused by the number of toxins in motor oil or that because the motor oil surrounding the seeds, they could not get enough oxygen to start to grow out of the seed coat.…

Through both simple and fractional distillation an equimolar solution of ethyl acetate and propyl acetate was seperated. After distilling 20 mL of the mixture the samples were collected in fractions, which were then analyzed using gas chromatography. The mole ratios of the distillations were converted to a percentage to analyze percent composition. Simple distillation yielded the following results: S1- 69.88% EA/ 30.12% PA, S2- 66.73% EA/ 33.27% PA, and S3- 46.42% EA, 53.58% PA. Fractional distillation yielded: F1- 82.66% EA/ 17.34% PA, F2- 79.89% EA/ 20.11% PA, F3- 44.50% EA/ 55.50% PA, and 5.65% EA/ 94.35% PA.…

We notice that no change occur in appearance of oil even it being heat until 1900C. From the result obtained, we notice that the boiling temperature raise when salt and sugar is added but no changes occur when cornmeal and gelatin is added. Boiling point increase due to decrease of vapor pressure. Water does not vaporize easily because the surface area for water to escape to the surrounding is decreasing when solute like salt and sugar are added to it. More energy are required to increase the vapor pressure of sugar solution or salt solution to exceed the atmospheric pressure so that…
