According to Morris Rosenberg, scholar who developed the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, there are two branches of adolescent self-esteem to take into consideration: baseline self-esteem and barometric self-esteem. Baseline self-esteem refers to an adolescent’s frequent sense of worth, where as barometric self-esteem refers to the adolescent’s sense of self worth throughout the course of the day. Barometric self-esteem is more prominent than baseline self-esteem among adolescents due to the everyday changes and interactions among peers, family, school, etc. (Rosenberg, 1986). Adolescents with low self-esteem are at greater risk to impregnate a partner or get pregnant and perform poorly in school. Low self-esteem can often trigger more problems for adolescents such as depression, self-harm, drug and alcohol use, delinquency, eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia, and suicide. Even though adolescents who are at risk with such behavior obtain low-self esteem, it is not confirmed that having low self-esteem can cause an adolescent to engage in problematic causes.
