Reflection On Reinvesting In Arts Education

1. A key concept that I experienced throughout this course was collaboration. According to “Reinvesting in Arts Education: Winning America 's Future Through Creative Schools,” establishing collaborative connections among different educators in the arts is a top priority in education reform to foster a “creativity-rich environment” in schools (vii). Collaboration is getting emphasized in education reform because it helps build more creative atmospheres that in turn, give students more opportunity to grow. In this course, collaboration has helped the facilitators of this course provide my classmates and I with a creativity-rich environment by allowing us to explore and share our different perspectives on varying subject matter and also has helped …show more content…
At the start of this course, I did not know what to expect. I resolved to keep an open mind and participate to the best of my ability in hopes of broadening my understanding of the arts. Now that the course is coming to a close, I am proud to have participated in this class because it exceeded my expectations due to the passionate teachers and the comprehensive and engaging lessons they taught in music, theatre, visual art, and dance. As a result, this course has greatly enriched my knowledge of arts, arts integration, and arts …show more content…
Analysis ("The Elements of Dance," May 6) and The Artist’s Toolkit (“The Artist’s Toolkit,” May 6), however there are two things that will continue to be invaluable as I move towards my professional career in programming - facilitation experience, as well as integrating arts into non-arts content. It was incredibly rewarding to plan and perform two facilitations throughout the semester. Through these facilitations, my partners and I had the opportunity to practice our public speaking, explore the impacts of reflection and collaboration, and immediately get feedback on what we did well and could improve on. In professional settings, presentations and facilitations are very common ways to share progress and, thanks to my practice in facilitations, I am prepared to succeed. The other important topic is arts integration. I learned through course readings such as “Reinvesting in Arts Education: Winning America 's Future Through Creative Schools” that the arts are powerful tools that increase retention rates in content that can be hard to absorb. By understanding the potential of arts integration and by applying arts integration through my facilitations, I have become more effective at learning new material and teaching it. All-in-all, I am pleased with the experiences this course and teachers have given me and this course’s content will

In chapter six titled Music, Music, Music, the author discussed the importance of musical development, musical intelligence, components of music, selecting appropriate music, instruments, and making music. Musical development spans from infancy to primary grades. Isabelle and Raines (2012) stated that “understanding the unique characteristics of young children during specific developmental periods can provide a framework for developing a responsive curriculum,” (p. 187). Musical intelligence refers to the ability to understand pitch, melody, and rhythm at an advanced degree. Once children began to explore music with instruments, they begin to make music using chants, lullabies, songs, and body parts.…

Education, in the 21st century, refers to certain core competencies such as collaboration, digital literacy, critical thinking, and problem solving that advocates believe schools need to teach to help students thrive in today’s world. (Education Week, 2010). Students are encouraged to think critically and creatively, nevertheless, there are schools throughout the state of Kentucky that exclude the arts from their core curriculum which eliminates a creative outlet for students. Arts integration in public schools provide students the tools they need to think creatively and ameliorate their state mandated testing scores. The arts provide students with developmental skills that aid in the improvement of their fine motor skills, language development,…

TMA 07: Critical Review AA100 The Arts Past and Present was my first module with the Open University which has been a massive learning curve both in studying and being disciplined with my time to study. Over the months of studying there have been modules which I assumed I would thoroughly enjoy and modules which I assumed I would dislike, however this thinking has turned out to be the complete opposite. Use of my study time is something that I have found challenging at times as the modules have progressed and increased in difficulty. I have also found that you need to be especially self-motived and disciplined when completing each module.…

I attended the St. Ambrose University Dance Company Performance in the Rogalski Center Ballroom on Sunday, April 15th at 2pm. The dance company is a club here at St. Ambrose for students who may not have the time to fully commit to the dance team here at St. Ambrose. However, these individuals all share the love for dancing. Through this club they are able to continue to do so and practice dance without such a big time commitment. Although the time commitment is not as much, these six individuals; Rhett Koterba, Delaney Powers, Meagin Sichterman, Kaylin Sarver, Twyla Pereira and Libby Miller work incredible hard all year long to choreograph these beautiful pieces to perform for events like their showcase in the Rogalski Ballroom.…

As a student who has been in the education system for a long time there is plenty of holes in the system. A college education should come with the necessary skills not to only prosper into what you want to pursue but to also have the skills to be able to go into other disciplines and careers. The first thing to realize about school is that no matter what majora student decides he or she is going to choose as their discipline it won’t be what decide what job or career they are going into. But do schools provide the necessary education that all students need to flourish not only in academics but socially and cooperatively? Are there classes in the STEM program that helps a student to think imaginatively and creatively to come up…

Freshman student Hayden Grant looked horrified at his schedule, displaying the one class many were horrified of, Belly Dancing. At suburban Stevenson High School, they host a biennial fine arts festival named, “Odyssey”, to meet the Illinois State fine arts requirements for high schools. With over 110 presenters and many more classes to choose from, students are immersed in a variety of presentations and hands-on activities over the course of 2 days. Unfortunately for Hayden, one out of his four classes everyday happened to be Belly Dancing. After being asked about his experience, he has said, “I don’t want to talk about it” and then put his head down.…

The Fundamentality of the Arts in Public Education Picture a barren wasteland, empty of any thought that branches outside of normality. Beige walls decorate bland streets filled with broken dreams and sullied minds. This is the world without art. Earth takes breaths of life and joy because we strive to create. The world needs art, not for survival, but for the sake of its people.…

If all the world is a stage, then there are a lucky few that have a corner on the market: Their home, their world has always been the stage. And for those pursuing a degree from The University of Alabama’s Department of Theatre and Dance, their home, their stage does if fact span all the world—to performances of Hamilton and Kinky Boots and standing ovations at productions in Scotland and Ecuador. “We have been on a great run these past few years,” Bill Teague, professor and chair of UA’s Theatre and Dance Department, said. “Our students really have major accomplishments in the entertainment business, and it’s those accomplishments that we’re so proud of.”…

As technology advances, and becomes a greater part of society, it can often seem like the fine arts are losing their place in the technological world. More and more people are choosing to watch movies or T.V. shows instead of experiencing dance, theatre, or choral performances. However, I would argue that fine arts performances are every bit as important today as they were when they first began. These performances are there to entertain, challenge ideals, or allow for escape. For example, even if you don’t know the slightest thing about Ballet, you can still attend one to escape for a few hours into the story unfolding on stage.…

I am passionate about building a strong arts education community here. Providence bills itself as “The Creative Capital,” and it is true that we are flush with extraordinary theatres, concert halls, museums and arts organizations. But the reach of those programs does not fully extend beyond the white, upper-middle class citizens of this city. There is so much creativity to be shared amongst the people of our community, and I hope to steer those opportunities into the under-funded, under-reached corners of this city. I believe that it starts with the schools.…

Without financial support for the arts, parents and students are left to struggle with the problem and left with either no arts program or an arts program that is subpar. Students are the losers academically and creatively, while often those same schools ' athletic programs flourish. A student who is not athletically inclined and is struggling academically, may be led to greater successes with just the right arts experience or class, but without it, may never reach their full potential. Arts education must again be given a high priority in our education system if we wish to provide our society with high-achieving and the best prepared…

Through fine arts, students can learn about other cultures and ways of life (6). However, being involved in fine arts holds so much more than just cultural experience. In fine arts, students learn how to effectively use the creative process; the creative process itself is a learning experience (6). Arts connect students to history, culture, and creative thinking by allowing them to analyze paintings, plays, or written works of other cultures. Reading a play such as “The King and I” teaches about the culture and religion of the people and families living in Siam at the time the play took…

Art education is not something that should not exceed the budget of other schools that cannot afford it and instead be shared equally among all types of public schools. Art education is seems to benefit a young child dramatically, “The arts also contribute to the education of young children by helping them realize the breadth of human experience, see the different ways humans express sentiments and convey meaning, and develop subtle and complex forms of thinking” (Sousa) Although the arts are often thought of as separate subjects, like chemistry or algebra, they really are a collection of skills and thought processes that transcend all areas of human engagement. Art has its own form of educational value and students develop better interaction skills with their peers and the public. Being able to develop a bond with peers with their same interest’s help students open up and become less shy thus helping them build a more sophisticated way of thinking.…
