The series from National Public Radio named This I Believe has many essays that would be beneficial for any students to read and analyze. One essay that stuck out of all the others spoke of a Rubik Cube and the problems of language. In the essay “Accomplishing Big Things in Small Pieces,” William Wissemann address the problems he had with reading and writing due to him being dyslexic. If ENGL 1301 students were to study the essay, they would see Wissemann using rhetorical devices like anecdote, thesis, and analogy.
Wissemann’s short essay starts off with an anecdote that is carried on throughout the essay. The author notifies the reader that he can solve the Rubik cube and the amount of attention he gets from his talent. As a result, he is

The author’s thesis is “Solving the Rubik’s cube has made me believe that sometimes you have to take a few steps back to move forward.” A thesis controls the subject of the essay, states the significance to the readers, and summarizes the main points of the essay. If a writer fails to understand how to write a thesis then their essay’s direction, emphasis, and scope are unclear to the reader (Jamie 1). The author successfully integrates his anecdote into the thesis and continues to inform the reader of his problem that caused him to step back but move forward. The problem Wissemann faces is the struggle of having dyslexia. Due to dyslexia, he felt like letters and words were “scrambled and out of sequence.” After four years of learning many methods to help him read and write, he was finally able to understand the language. This example is the author taking steps back to move forward. Furthermore, the author had to give up his time of education to learn the foundation of the English language.
