Essentialism began in the 1930’s; it is a conservative philosophy of education, which formulated as a criticism of progressive trends (Parkay). It is based off the philosophies of realism and idealism. Essentialism emphasizes on traditional education, such as core curriculum. Essentialism focuses on the development of the mind and base reality to the physical world. Essentialists believe that the classroom should be teacher-directed in order for the students to learn. Essentialists usually teach math, spelling, reading, history, or language arts. Teachers that believe in this philosophy try to teach their students basic knowledge and skills for their development. These teachers believe that they should educate their students traditionally such as respecting authority, never giving up, consideration for other people, and knowledge to become influential citizens (Cohen). Essentialists do not use vocational education. The students are expected to master basic knowledge and skills, so they can go on to a higher-grade level. By having a teacher-oriented classroom, it allows the teacher to be an intellectual model for the students (Cohen). Students learn by listening to the teacher and their lectures. Classrooms are teacher driven.
