Essay Writing: Cleo's False

Great Essays
Cleo woke up to utter blackness. Why did school have to be so early? Her mind instantly went to Jem. The day before she had gotten into a fight with one of her best friends. They had been playing tag and Jem accused her of cheating. Jem always wanted everything to go her way and if it didn't, she got mad. Real mad. As Cleo slipped on her shoes and started to tie the laces she thought about the bus. Her and Jem lived semi close to each other so they were on the same bus. She was dreading it. She would have to find someone else to sit with because before she always sat with Jem. She packed her backpack and debated whether or not to miss the bus on purpose and have her mom drive her to school in order to not see Jem on the bus. She decided to …show more content…
Cleo called her back immediately and Abby picked up just as fast. A waterfall of words spilled out her mouth all at once, it was almost too fast for Cleo to understand. “OK, so Maria and I were hanging out. And Jem called me. SoIput her on speaker. She just started saying all this mean stuff about you. She said that you were being really mean to her. That you hit her a lot and that she did nothing to you and it was all your fault. She was basically just throwing you under a steamroller, putting you in a cement mixer truck, and putting you on display with a plaque that says BAD on it. But Maria and I didn't believe a word of it! We both know that you wouldn't do that to anyone let alone one of your best friends. We have seen Jem get mad at other people before. We saw the incident happen and then heard her lie about it saying she is the innocent one. We only hate her more now, and I know you didn't want us to choose, but we are. We are going to end things with Jem once and for all.” Abby angrily states, taking a deep and well-deserved breath. “I knew she would do something like this.” Cleo said, she had also seen her get into fights and said she was all goodie-goodie and innocent. “Then it’s settled, tomorrow, if she says one more thing, we are done.” Abby says …show more content…
“Cleo, on the phone with Jem yesterday, we pretended to be on Jem’s side and said that we were gonna tell you at lunch and that she could come over to our table.” Maria said with a laugh. “Um. ok. Whatever.” Cleo responded. She would not have handled it that way but it still worked, she guessed. They saw Jem walking over and Maria and Abby gave each other a slight wink. Jem reached the table. “Hi Jem.” Cleo said with a sarcastic smile. “Be quiet, Cleo. We have something to say to you. You hurt me and now we are going to hurt you.” The three of them laughed discreetly. They all knew she did nothing to harm Jem. It was a game of tag for Pete sake! Abby spoke next, “Actually Jem, We have something to say to YOU.” Jem looked at all of them until Cleo spoke. “You are accusing me of stuff that I didn't do and they know it!” She said, referring to Abby and Maria, “We think you should be the one to go.” She said triumphantly, happy she was the one who got to say it first. “What do you mean?” Jem asked, not expecting the turning of tables. “Thats right.” Abby said, “With us, it's all for one or one for all. You hurt Cleo and tried to turn us against her. Don't you think we should just end this drama now and get you out!” “Fine then.” Jem said, obviously not fine. “I never liked any of you anyway. I can live without you.” And with that, she walked away. “I feel kind of cheap though.” Cleo said. Even though she

Life is short. That is the simple and unforgiving fact that cannot be avoided. It can often pass by as quickly as it comes when noses are buried in our cell phones instead of observing and appreciating the changing of seasons or the orange-purple sunset that concludes each day. That one idea— to pay attention— is what drives Alice Steinbach 's philosophy on writing along with a collection of other tactics taught to her by her ninth grade creative writing teacher Miss Dennis, which is showcased in her essay "The Miss Dennis School of Writing". Steinbach creates a well-rounded philosophy consisting of many elements throughout the essay.…

Their Eyes Were Watching God - Language: Instrument of Injury and Salvation There’s no doubt that words are able to boost someone’s confidence, but words also have the power to strip away that confidence. Words that are spoken out loud, or even written on paper have the ability to affect how people feel about themselves and the world. Similarly, in the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston, the theme of language in an injurious way is evident when Joe Starks yells at Janie about her age, but language is shown as a tool of salvation when Tea Cake reassures Janie of his love, as well as in the end when Tea Cake tells Janie she’s young at heart.…
