The HSAP program is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me, the benefits are overwhelmingly positive. I will be able to gain experience working in a laboratory, it will give me a leg up in the college application process, and it will teach me new methods to correctly gather and present scientific research. I intend to use the knowledge gained from this program to help me narrow down what field of science I want to study during college. More specifically artificial organs and limbs, stem cell research, and all applications where technology interfaces with the human body. I realize that this program will not go into all fields that interest me, but it will help me expand my awareness of interesting topics and what appeals to me. I am interested in the biomedical engineering field because it allows you to help patients and construct devices that will improve their quality of life. Helping people and the world as a whole is what I want my career to be about, I have been given a life with many opportunities and have been very fortunate to have financial stability, and help when I needed it. To be able to give someone who was less fortunate what I have had the benefit of receiving, would be gratifying. Although healthy now, throughout my life I have required the assistance of various AFO devices, and extensive physical therapy for my cerebral palsy. This struggle has lead me to see first hand what it is like to work with people in this field, from the perspective of the patient.
