Why Everyone Should Learn to Play the Piano Hobbies have long been pursued as a way of making good use of one’s time. They have also been a source of enrichment for people. Some hobbies can be done in small timeframes between other activities. For instance, reading a book or working a crossword puzzle can be done while waiting for a bus. Other hobbies require large chunks of time in order to really advance a skill or to see the activity to completion. An example of this sort of hobby is playing golf. There is a wide array of genres that can provide worthwhile hobbies such as sports, art, crafts, gardening, cooking, and music. In the area of music, it’s hard to beat piano playing. It may seem backwards to think that playing the piano can relieve stress. It looks complicated and frustrating to onlookers and beginners. But, once a tune is learned and the music flows freely, it is calming to just get lost in the making of the music. The creativity it inspires helps people problem solve and search beyond themselves. Self-discipline is required to learn any instrument. It is good for emotional health to improve self-discipline because mastering oneself gives a strong sense of accomplishment as well as providing confidence. The piano is special in this regard because of the complexity of playing multiple notes at the same time and using both hands in the same intensity. Playing the piano usually affords opportunities to perform for others. And while this can be the source of stage fright and other anxious feelings, there is something very gratifying about entertaining people and having them appreciate your
