Essay Why College Athletes Should Not Be Paid

How appealing does it sound to be able to play a college sport after high school? That contingency would be an opportunity most students would love to enjoy. “Playing college sports is about getting to play the game you have an unexplainable obsession with for four supplementary years. And that is a privilege, not an occupation” (Murphy, 2). Many people think these athletes should get money for all the work they put into these sports, but there are many reasons against this opinion. Although the argument is that athletes at a collegiate level do not have as much time to work for extra money like other college students, college athletes should not be paid for choosing to play a college sport. Football players at Northwestern University began one of the most high-profile efforts at demanding more rights involving payment in college athletics. In this union, they expect to be paid as an employee of the university (Murphy, 1). There are many inaccurate conditions with this statement. First of all, these students should not be considered employees. Yes, being an athlete at this level can include a great deal of commitment, but it is not a job. According to the online dictionary, a job is a duty or responsibility a person is expected or obliged to do (job, 1). No one is being forced into playing a college sport. This decision is made when a student is enrolled in a college and decides to try out for a particular sports team. It is a choice that any college student could make. Going into this experience a student knows the time, effort, and commitment they will need to put into this sport. If they do not agree with the regulations, they should not even begin the process of becoming a college
