Essay: Why Adnan Syed Should Be Considered Guilty

Why should Adnan Syed be considered innocent? In this investigation, a man named Adnan Syed was accused of murdering his girlfriend, Hae Min Lee. His old best friend Jay, said he witness the dead body of Hae after Adnan killed her. Adnan should be considered innocent because, during the murder of Hae, Adnan was seen at the library by Asia Mclean, wasn’t that upset about the breakup, and was a smart student who wouldn’t kill anyone after they broke up.

First, Adnan is innocent because Asia Mclean and her boyfriend saw him at the library. In Serial Asia Mclean says, “And Adnan was just sitting at the computer, checking emails or something. And I sat down next to him. We started chatting.” (Episode 1, pg 18). This quote shows that Asia Mclean saw Adnan at the library and started

Jay told the police that Adnan told him the plan of how he is going to murder Hae. Jay also said that Adnan showed him the body of Hae in his trunk. In the podcast, Jay says, “Because it’s not something you forget – where you were when you saw a dead body in the trunk of a car.” (Episode 4, pg 65). This explains that Adnan is guilty since Jay witness the body of Hae after Adnan murdered her. Since Jay saw the body in the trunk, this is proof that Adnan had murdered Hae. However, this is false since every time Jay was interviewed, his story kept being changed many times. In the podcast Sarah Koenig said, But, of course, two weeks later big swathes of his story have changed.” (Episode 4, pg 67). This quote is showing that Jay is changing his story a couple of times when he is interviewed. Usually, if someone is changing their story a lot, it probably could mean that they are lying and they never saw it or, they could be exaggerating the story. To summarize, when Jay was telling the cops his stories, parts of it seemed to change a lot, this indicates that Jay could be a false
