Passenger Pigeons Essay

The passenger pigeon was once the most abundant birds in North America. They travel in large flocks. The flocks are so large they darkened the sky. Hunting and habitat destruction is what led to the extinction of the passenger pigeons. Martha was the name of the last known living passenger pigeon that died in 1914. There are plans to bring back the passenger pigeon by using a process called de extinction. The process will consist of reconstructing a genome; insert it into a band tailed pigeon stem cell. It would then transform into a germ cell, the precursor of egg and sperm. The scientist would then inject the germ cells into an already developing ban tailed pigeons. When those birds mate, their offspring would show the passenger pigeons …show more content…
On one hand I think it’s amazing that we have advanced so much in our scientific fields that we are trying to clone. Bringing back the passenger pigeon would be great and possible even a great advance in history. They could potentially help the environment and boost scientific studies. On the other hand I think it would be a bad idea just because of the things we don’t know about the passenger pigeon. We don’t know what kind of things they could bring back with them. The range of diseases and other pathogens that these birds might bring back could not be very good. Also they may not survive and thrive in the environment like we hope they would. There food supply and homes have been long gone and it may be hard for them to find new ones. Another reason would be what if they are extinct for a reason, and bringing them back is something that is not supposed to happen. I fear that if they are brought back with no food sources or environment like they used to have may just hurt them even worse. I really don’t know what would happen if we brought them back. They may thrive and help the environment tremendously, or it could be a total disaster. Nothing guarantees that the passenger pigeon will not come out messed up or deformed. Bringing back the passenger pigeon would be a great thing but, weather or not we successfully bring back the passenger pigeon there will be good and bad things that could

In "On the Waterfront" the pigeons symbolize Terry Malloy, and the choices he made all through the film. A pigeon's regular drive is to fly, yet these pigeons have been prepared not to. Despite the fact that he's a durable previous boxer, his unbalanced look after these birds is confirmation of an exceptional bond between them. The symbolism of him really inside the pen himself, obvious when he tends the birds, proposes this bond too. Malloy is a visionary, a mind boggling and delicate man.…

I chose an article from The New York Times titled “Paging Dr. Pigeon; You’re Needed in Radiology” by Nicholas Bakalar that was published on November 24, 2015. The article discussed the recent study of training and using pigeons to identify benign or malignant breast tumors by looking at a slide from a biopsy or a mammogram at the University of California Davis medical Center, University of Iowa, and the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences at Emory University. This study was conducted as a tool and “surrogates for human subjects in medical image perception studies because they can be used in repetitive ways that few people could tolerate” (Bakalar, 2015). The study also stated that pigeons are extraordinary discriminators of complex…

In addition to the fear of cognitively functioning animals lies the fear of breaking the natural order of nature, where the evolution of the world’s species would be dictated by humans, not the ecosystem’s natural order. (Yu). The natural order is formed by the boundaries of specification of different biological species such as homo-sapiens and other creatures. By creating a completely scientific species, it destroys the barrier that we’ve logically set to distinguish humans apart from animals. David Haussler, a cofounder of the project to bring back extinct animals, stated, “There’s always this fear that somehow, if we do it, we’re going to accidentally make something horrible, because only nature can really do it right.…

New Take on Tropical Songbirds’ Alternative Lifestyles A breakthrough study published on Friday in the journal Science uses life history theory to explain why tropical songbirds typically raise fewer chicks than temperate songbirds. What’s life history theory? Life history theory seeks to explain the ways in which natural selection works to determine a given organism’s anatomy and behaviors. Life history theory suggests that reproductive tendencies, or “life history strategies,” are part of a complex system of species traits, or “life history characteristics.”…

Over the past few decades, many animals have become extinct either due to natural causes or humans. Recently scientists and researchers believe that animals can be brought back to existence through a process called de-extinction. Some believe that bringing them back to life will make up for the wrong of extinction as stated in Text 1 : 3Q The Ethics of Species ‘De -Extinction’ by Angela Herring. However others claim that because of de-extinction, extinct species are being brought back but millions of other species in the ecosystem are at risk of extinction, stated in Text 3 : Case against Species Revival. Extinct species should not be brought back into existence because it will put many species at risk and will create controversy in…

It is said from Tim Male, vice president of at Defenders of Wildlife: “Politically controversial species attract more funding, as do species in heavily studied places: ‘We live in a world of unconscious triage.” Most animals we see today will end up disappearing just because of the accomplishment of not being able to pay for certain developments. Since each method favors certain priorities, when the computer method became about, it made more sense due to all of these methods not working for all species. These methods were working and capable of doing its job, but did not work for every specie roaming the earth.…
