Throughout the years, decades, and centuries our country has come a long way with the subject of marriage, there has been protests, debates, and campaigns regarding this topic. As I mentioned we have come a long way considering the fact in the past marriage was arranged, and people did not have the choice of who they would wanted to marry. “Marriage was an economic and political transaction in the lower classes.”(Page 33 Reader) It was up to the mother and father of the child to select the female or male they would like their child to marry. This, however, led to incline of divorce which tripled during the 1900s. It wasn’t until the 1950s that marriage increased once again after the great depression. After world war two male bread winners increased the promotion of the golden age of marriage People were now getting married younger than ever, life spans were lengthened dramatically, and divorce rates fell once again.
As marriage dramatically changed beginning in the 1800s, I believe that these changes have been a positive influence when referring to today’s marriage. Today we are given the right to choose who we want to marry. This is a positive aspect in my perspective because you can marry into values that are similar to your own. I feel this is very important when it comes to marriage because without values and similarities many marriages would be miserable and increase the divorce rate. Before the 1800s marriage was considered a huge financial crisis on families. Once the burden was dropped men no longer had to wait for marriage but instead relied on their own financial stability. If marriage was still a financial problem many people wouldn’t get married. Also before the 1800s marriage was considered one link in a larger system of political and economic alliances.
