Nicolaes Tulp and the Entombment both have very similar themes, and style. The spotlight effect in both paintings is very dramatic. Both painting were painted with oil on canvas, and have very strong sense of style. In the paintings, both men were known as “criminals” before their death therefore showing more dramatized dullness and very little architecture as well. There is no background in either painting as stated previously. Caravaggio and Rembrandt both used Christ-like iconography for the corpse. The timing and locations for these two paintings are very different, one being painted in Vatican City, and one in Amsterdam but both seem to have a similar outlook on death. However, The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp isn’t a baroque art. You don’t feel as emotional nor does it pull you in as much as the Entombment. All of the Surgeons in the painting look confused and are pushed to the corner of the painting. In the humans in the Entombment, you can feel the struggle and difficultly they are experiencing.
