In the future year of 2040, only two and a half decades away, the Arctic may not have any ice during its summer season, due to global warming (“Global Warming Fast”). 2 The global average temperature continues to get higher and melt the polar ice caps because of the amount of carbon dioxide being released into the air. Carbon dioxide is a gas that contributes to the greenhouse effect, which is when the sun’s rays enter the atmosphere and are reflected back into space by oceans and other flat surfaces, but are then caught by greenhouse gases, such as water vapor, nitrous oxide, methane and carbon dioxide. When they hit a greenhouse gas, the rays are then reflected back to Earth, creating more heat than what the Earth is …show more content…
Global warming is also causing carbon levels in the ocean to get too high and is leading to ocean acidification, which leads to coral bleaching. Coral bleaching is when the algae living in the coral tissue can no longer survive due to too much carbon in the water. Without the oxygen given off by the algae, the coral then becomes sick and can’t survive. If the algae is not able to regain its population in that reef it soon dies.Global warming is also creating dangerous heat waves, severe droughts and extreme storms (“Global Warming Science”). 4 Last year was ranked as the hottest year on Earth since 1880, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientists and NASA (Cole). 1 In order to stop global warming from getting any worse, people could start walking instead of driving, they could talk to government officials and ask for a limit to be put on the amount of fuel factories and power plants can burn, and they could be more energy efficient with the things they use in their homes. People need to take action to help keep the Earth from losing all life and ecosystems that global warming is destroying or the world will suffer from an extreme
