Attention-getting device: The summer between high school and college is supposed to be one of the most important summers of your life.
A.This summer is for transitioning from childhood to adulthood and having complete independence for the first time.
B. I took advantage of my new freedom and decided to go into the city and experience it on foot, by myself, for the first time. By accident my path took me past Emanuel AME Church. That summer, for me, can be summed up in one image. Looking up at Emanuel AME through the chain-link fence that surrounded the perimeter. This was where white supremacist Dylann Roof shot and killed nine people that June.
C. Pause. II. Credibility statement: This happened in my city of Charleston.

Main idea: Transition from feelings before and after shooting. During this section use hand gestures that move towards your heart and chest to signify that you are talking about yourself.
A. Support: Before the shooting I never saw being Southern as more than saying y’all and eating good food.
B. Support: After the shooting, I realized (much later than I should have) that racism and hate were still tied to my culture as well.
C. Support: After other terrorist attacks by white supremacists, like in Charlottesville, I see many young Southerners of the same mind as me. We all have the strong desire to no longer tolerate racism. Conclusion
I. Review Thesis: These events have changed how I view my Southern identity.
II. Review relevance to the audience: If you’re not from this region you may find it difficult to relate to the complex identity of the South. But, even if you weren’t born here by choosing to go to school here you have adopted Southern culture, and perhaps have even gained your own piece of Southern identity.
III. Closure: Our generation has the ability to make a new inclusive South, one known for its Southern hospitality to all people no matter their
