Silent but deadly. It might be too late to save the aquatic animals in the Great Lakes from migrant species that have come to take over, and make a new home. Shipping vessels coming from other waters carry many unwanted guests, known as invasive species, to make home in our waters in the United States. Invasive species hiding in the ballast of ships entering the Great Lakes damage the Great Lakes’ ecosystem.
Invasive species enter the Great Lakes in the ballasts of shipping vessels. Shipping vessels are large ships, such as a freighter, that contains cargo such as iron, grain, steel, and consumer products that are usually imported from other countries. In every large ship there is a ballast which is similar to a tank filled with water. The ballast main purpose is to ensure the safety and stability mandated to operate a ship. During the vessels voyage they will load and unload water at many

Species brought over include the eurasian ruffe, many types of mussels, and the round goby. One of the most popular known and problematic species today is the european zebra mussel. Zebra mussels were brought over in 1984 and have remained here ever since. The mussels pose a huge threat to our ecosystem in many different ways. Zebra mussels are known for their excessive access to food and space. First and foremost, they like most other invasive species multiply so rapidly that they extend through the ecosystem quickly. In addition to them rapidly multiplying, the mussel is a threat to the ecosystems food web, these species consume food so quickly that they drive other species to starve, such as the phytoplankton whose numbers have fallen beyond predicted phosphorus levels. Also, with the zebra mussels rapid food consumption this leaves other species with less to consume in order to live a long and healthy

This species was introduced into the UK in the 1970s as food source. It spread quickly up and downstream and human introduction, although illegal, is still continuing. It may travel over land to colonise near freshwater. Its negative impact is mainly due to the loss of the native crayfish species, the white-clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes) through spread of disease and direct competition. Furthermore, the Signal crayfish is also impacting the river banks as it uses to burrow into them, creating instability of the vegetation and the ground.…

Furthermore, the articles also emphasized the ongoing population decline of native mussel species is no longer so. That native mussels are taking refuge and that their populations are steadily increasing. This is proof that the effects and populations of the Zebra mussel can be controlled; however, the mechanisms or conditions in which these native mussels are able to take refuge is unknown. Further experimentation, should be conducted to find what these mechanisms are, so that they can be replicated to further increase native mussel…

The reading states that zebra mussel has long been spreading out from its original habitats and has now reached parts of North America. therefore it poses a serious threat to freshwater fish populations in all North America and provides three reasons for support. However, the professor explains that zebra mussel is not likely to the serious threat to the freshwater fish population and refutes each of the author's reasons. First, the article claims that it is possible that zebra mussel spread to North America from Europe by human transportation. The professor refutes this point by saying that in the reading author refers to this that mussel collects in the ballast water of the ship.…

A species that is now endangered because of invasive species is the Higgins Eye Pearlymussel. “The main role of the Higgins Eye Pearlymussel in its aquatic ecosystem is that it filters water to raise the quality of the water. Also, their beds make microhabitats on the bottom of rivers for other species to use.” (US Fish and Wildlife Service). Along with having their habitat wrecked due to poor water quality, from human actions such as industrial runoff, the Higgins Eye Pearlymussel is threatened by the zebra mussel.…

Within the past several decades, the zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha has made its way to the top of the list as one of the most destructive invasive species in the North American water systems. While many studies have been made focusing on the ecological impact of zebra mussels, little is known about the geographical history of their invasions and patterns of genetic differentiation among and within populations in their native and invaded ranges (May, Gelembiuk, Panov, Orlova, & Lee, 2006). From what is known, zebra mussels were first described by German zoologist Peter Simon Pallas in 1769 and originally endemic to the northern and southern regions of the Ponto-Caspian Sea in Eastern Europe (Johnson & Carlton, 1996). As globalization took place, the construction of…

Another significant motivation behind why the biological systems in the Florida Keys are in threat is a result of intrusive animal groups. An intrusive species is a "non-local creature that has encroached into a zone and may have genuine hindering impacts on local organisms"(The Lionfish Intrusion). Local species are compelled to rival the intrusive mixed bag for sustenance and living space. Ordinarily the obtrusive species prevails and overwhelms the local structures. Florida has such a friendly atmosphere, to the point that numerous species that are acquainted with the area frequently flourish.…
