If you go from working out every day and pushing your body to the limit, to doing nothing and eat junk food and drinking sodas then you will gain a lot of weight. Then when you finally start back Wrestling and working out hard you could be more prone to injury. Most good wrestlers would join an offseason club or group. That way you can still practice and get better in the offseason, and still exercise. I know this from my own experience. After my freshman year I did nothing and I gain weight. Then the next season the first couple of weeks were really bad, my body was not use to exercising like that. It took me a while to get back to my weight class. After my sophomore year, I went to an offseason club “Backyard Wrestling” and I wrestled for them all summer long. I maintained my weight and got even better the next season. I went from not starting to being a team captain and one match away from making a states. Also from sophomore year to this year I have a lot less injuries. This year I didn’t even have an injury all season and i think wrestling over the summer really helped that. When you’re not working out or wrestling in the offseason rest and ice up. I started wrestling for the Smithville Youth Wrestling Club. At the time I was in the fifth grade and I was 12 years old. At first I hated the idea of wrestling because of the tight singlet you had to wear, and also the idea of people making fun of you because of “rolling around with other guys”. Plus to make thing worse a lot of the other kids there have already wrestled since they were 5 which gave them more experience. I remember coming home from practice and just hating wrestling because it was hard work…

What do Billy Saylor from Cambell University, Joseph LaRosa from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, and Jeff Reese from the University of Michigan all have in common. Unfortunately, they are dead now and are because of unsafe weight cutting methods in wrestling. Wrestlers and other athletes in sports with weight classes should not cut weight by starving and dehydrating themselves. Most wrestlers lose lots of weight by dehydrating themselves and losing water weight or by starving themselves and not eating for days at a time. Sadly, as the season went on, I never got the starting spot I was hoping to get. But I had my junior year coming up, and I was not going to fall into the same trap that I did my sophomore season. The valuable lesson that I learned sophomore year is that practicing in the off-season is the most important part of baseball. I couldn't let the skills that I had fine-tuned, disappear over the period of not playing baseball. So every day in the off-season I did something involved with getting better at baseball whether it was running, throwing, or hitting in the batting cages.…

In my college career which has been around 4 years now, these first two weeks are the first of any trimester or semester that instead of being enrolled in classes, I’m enrolled in an internship. This is definitely a change from the norm but at the same time it is exciting as well. It gives me the opportunity to use or observe some of the material that I have learned so far in my classes at Johnson & Wales in a real scenario. This internship allows me as well to gain much needed additional experience in the sports and athletics industry and will give me a more holistic view of the athletic program. It will allow me to see many different roles and see from various projects what parts of athletics I like or dislike since I am overall still open for the future to a variety of roles in the sports industry…
