Winston smith rebels against the party as he has a love affair with Julia, rents Mr.Charrington's, wants to join the brotherhood, and buys a paperweight. To begin, Julia and Winston's relationship are a form of "ownlife"(Orwell 82) which is a direct rebellion against the party. The “sex instinct [creates] a world of its own which [is] outside the Party's control and which therefore [has] to be destroyed if possible.”(Orwell 132-133).Winston and Julia engage in a powerful political act that Winston considers to be a “blow struck against the Party” (Orwell 126). Every move made by Winston is in line with getting closer to the Brotherhood and bringing down Big Brother. O'Brien asks Winston if he is willing to “cheat, to forge, to blackmail, to corrupt the minds of children [...] to do anything which is likely to cause demoralization and weaken the power of the party”(Orwell 172) to which Winston replies he “yes.”(Orwell 172).Winston is not afraid to question authority and join an underground revolution against the overwhelming threat of death and torture, that is what makes Winston smith a hero. Lastly, Winston Smith rebels against the government by purchasing a paperweight.The paperweight is something that he finds beautiful, it does not serve an essential purpose. In his society, anything pleasurable is forbidden. As Winston say’s it is “a queer thing, even a compromising thing, for a party member to have in his possession. Anything old, and for that matter anything beautiful, [is] vaguely suspect” (Orwell 96). The paperweight represents his rebellion against oppression and takes him back to his childhood before the Party is in power.
