In the course of my research the question arises “Should anyone be able to carry guns on college campuses?” (Zalneraitis, 2011-2012). As the years go by violence lingers, especially on school campuses from elementary to universities. And the fascination with guns by children, teenagers and young adults has instigated a considerable amount of schools to place a zero-tolerance policy for anything declared as a weapon, such as guns, knives, screwdrivers, etc. into place. These schools have even installed metal detectors to assist in keeping students safe. Not a single person needs to be persuaded that crime remains an extremely serious problem in the United States (Wiseman, 2011). These citizens believe students and faculty might have a chance to protect themselves if they are allowed to carry. In my research I discovered that there are two organizations that support and rally for concealed carry on college campuses, they are the National Rifle Association and Students for Concealed Carry on Campus. Even though the National Rifle Association is a non-profit organization and their primary mission is to protect and defend the right to keep and bear arms. Through independent research these groups express and agree that concealed handgun license holders are less likely than non-license holders to commit violent crimes. In 2013 there were only 5 states that allowed concealed carry on college campuses, at the present day there are 11 states that allow concealed carry on college campuses and this is largely in part due to the NRA and Students for Concealed Carry on Campus. These groups and many others, including individuals advocate for concealed carry on college campuses by showing evidence and voicing their opinions. Furthermore they believe that it would send a strong message to the would-be crazed killers that we defend ourselves on our campuses. They use the stats that young women are sexually assaulted every day on college campuses, but the laws prevent these young women from carrying a gun to protect themselves and believe that the rape crimes would go down if they were allowed to carry.
