Multiple studies have shown that between 1997 and 2007 the number of players that have had concussions doubled between eight and thirteen year olds and then tripled for older youth players according to the Southwest Athletic Trainer’s Association. Lori Cook from the University of Texas said that between 2001 and 2009 just football alone sent about 25,376 kids under the age of nineteen to the emergency room for traumatic brain injury each year. From just one concussion one might experience: memory problems, confusion, nausea and vomiting. After multiple concussions it becomes more serious and can be linked to brain damage. Even after one concussion the brain experiences damage. A study was conducted to people right after they had a concussion and people who were healthy. The concussion participants performed twenty-five percent worse on memory and cognition tests compared to healthy people. Even one year later the same people that had a concussion still showed signs of brain damage, and still showed the same score on the test of memory

I personally do not like football but I’m sure there are other ways that younger kids can play football without tackling each other and getting hurt. “ Goldstein and his colleagues advocate for no tackle football before 14 because children’s bodies, particularly their necks and upper bodies, aren’t strong enough to counteract the bobbling of the head and shaking of the brain that occurs during tackles” (Kounang 1). Not only does that sound painful but why would a parent want that for their child.…

Or is worse comes to worse then your brain would never heal and you would have those awful side effects for the rest of your life and that would make out to be a sucky life. Concussions are one of the worst injuries a person can sustain because they affect one of the most vital parts of the body; the brain. Marcos A. Abreu, Wirt Edwards, and Brandon D. A sizable percentage of concussions in the NFL are caused by T-bone hits or hits between the eyes, and these hits offset the brain’s center of gravity (Giles, 2016). Concussions can also cause permanent long term damage to the wiring of the brain. In older athletes, blows to the head can cause more harm because adults have one-eighth to a quarter-inch of space between the brain itself and the skull. This allows for more room for the brain to repeatedly hit the skull, whereas in a teenage athlete, the brain is flush with the skull, and doesn’t give the brain any room to move (Giles, 2016). While any hit to the brain is devastating, it seems as though adults are more at risk of permanent neurological damage.…
