Essay On Why I Want To Obtain An American Education

Over 5,000 miles away from home, but I can still vividly remember the only piece of advice my parents gave me, as they tearfully dropped me off at the airport. “Do not forget where you are coming from”, they said. I was only seventeen and the first child in my family to attend college. But while my journey to America is a story for another day, let me tell you a story about how where I come from has influenced my decision to transfer colleges. One notable thing you need to understand about my people is the high level of importance we set for education. In fact, education is the language of success in Nigeria. But why is my country still underdeveloped, despite this favorable socioeconomic factor? It has a high unemployment rate and about 55 percent of its population living below the poverty line. The answer lies in our traditional educational system’s focus on the memorization of theories rather than critical thinking and application skills. This led me to seek an American education. I am interested in a college that aligns with my now-realized academic and personal interests. These interests include studying in a competitive and global business school of where I can major Economics as an applied science, and specializing in Accounting. This will help me to understand real-world problems before using the theories learnt in lectures to offer lasting solutions. Furthermore, it will prepare me to accomplish my goal of becoming an International Business and Tax lawyer, as I take courses in international accounting, federal tax planning and administration, and financing governments’,
