I am an Eagle Scout and an active Assistant Scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America, what I believe to be the best leadership training program in the US. One serves in several leadership roles to earn this rank. To meet these requirements, I was an Instructor for two years and a Troop Guide for three. Instructors are in charge of groups of one to three Scouts for skills tutoring. The Troop Guide leads the instructors and teaches large group lessons to first years. We had over 25 new Scouts two of the years I was Troop Guide. I developed and ran two Instructor training programs to get our Troop ready for such an influx of new Scouts. Also, I would sometimes meet one on one outside of meetings to help those falling behind keep up with the group or those who wanted to advance faster do so. Scouting gave me hundreds of hours of tutoring experience. It also allowed me to work with all sorts of people. We’ve had Scouts with down syndrome, autism, and ADHD in addition to those who did not come in with a learning attitude every week. I learned to teach them all and find I was very successful at it. My personal essay for the Common App was reviewed by two English teachers, a friend, and my parents. Surprisingly, the most blistering comments came from my parents. They said grammatically, my essays were flawless, but I lacked some serious depth. I had to hear how boring and uninspiring my essays were from them. This was tough because my work is usually received better. I always responded with thanks to everyone who helped me and understood that they truly were helping. I had to completely shift tone and style to write a good college essay which took some time. However, I did not blindly alter everything my reviewers suggested. I always heard criticism out, but sometimes had my reasons to keep things as I had. Overall, it was a learning experience and I successful one since I am now a fully enrolled college
