Personal Narrative: Devout Follower Of Atheism

Improved Essays
Once I was a devout follower of the Catholic religion; now I am a follower of Atheism. Growing up, I was raised in a catholic house hold and for the most part it was enjoyable and not much was pushed onto me or expected of me in terms of my belief system. I went to catholic school from preschool all the way through high school. There are many reasons as to why I converted to atheism but the main reason was because in my eyes, I saw a lot of fallacies and sophistry in religion, a lot of it was aimed towards other people’s beliefs. I currently lack a belief of any God or gods of any form; I believe in scientific facts and theories that have conclusive and irrefutable evidence to back up claims. I do not hate religion, nor do I look down upon …show more content…
For my entire life, I have been raised in a catholic house. My parents are wonderful people who made me the man I am today. I believe that they were pretty strict when I was growing up; not about my religion but about academics and making sure I was doing the best I could possible do in whatever I was doing in life. In my house, we were thought that prayer was a solution for a lot of life 's problems. We were taught that no matter what I was going through, God had a plan for me and any everything happened for a reason; everything in life was supposed to teach me a lesson. I was told that God was the solution to any of life 's hardships I may encounter. I enjoyed childhood and being raised catholic I was raised right and even though I am an Atheist, I think I will raise my children Catholic. I do not hate religion, nor do I hate anyone who believes in a God or gods, I just don 't believe in a religious deity of any …show more content…
One of main reasons for my conversion is because of certain fallacies thought by religion and I saw that people use it as a tool for hate and bigotry. I saw a lack of evidence in an omnipotent deity who created everything. I saw that religious people were using religious text for sophistry and cherry picking teachings to bolster and back up their hatred. I now look to authors such as Charles Darwin, Christopher Hitchens, and Richard Dawkins for answers to life 's questions. I see that science has evidence to back up the claims that are brought up and religion relies on blind faith and unfalsifiable hypothesizes to prove its claims. I had too many questions that religion couldn 't answer. I just wasn 't satisfied with the answers that religion provided about life and

Everyone at some point in their life has an issue dealing with self-identity. Whether it has to do with personal beliefs, or losing a loved one, everyone goes through it. We all have a time where we just want to figure out who we really are, and I mean that could take years. I went through that phase most of my years here at Fort. I tried being friends with everyone, and after a while I started to realize that maybe some of the people that I was hanging out with weren’t the best influence on me and on my faith.…

Sometimes in this world, when all seems black and nothing is looking up, hope is the only thing one can have in order to keep on going. In William Bradford’s Northern Experiences we see the Pilgrims, making their sacred journey across the Atlantic Ocean on the Mayflower, consistently use religion and their belief in God as a means of hope. Many people at almost all points in history have looked to their “god” when everything else seemed lost. For religion is something that pervades outside your current circumstances, and therefore is a great resource to pull from when it looks as though there is nothing left you can do to help a situation. Crossing treacherous waters on a perilous voyage filled with uncertainty, there was only so much that the future settlers of Plymouth Plantation had control over.…

While my beliefs contradict with hers in some places, I identify primarily with Laura Stinger from the article “Choosing My Religion”. Being raised as a Greek Orthodox, I was taught a pretty straightforward, but lenient version of Christianity. Growing up in such an easygoing religious environment allowed me to be constantly thinking about questions similar to the ones Laura wonders about, such as ones concerning my purpose in life or the reason humans are on Earth. I identify with her primarily because of her general philosophy concerning religions. When describing what religion means to her, Laura said, “To me, religion is my own personal set of beliefs”.…

People believe in god for many different reasons. Some believe that there is a greater power, some need an explanation to what life holds after death, and some just need answers for the things we cannot explain. "Pascal assumes that there are just two options for wagering: either believe in the God of Christianity, or don't. But those aren't the only options. There are lots of religions with rival accounts of who God is, how to serve him, and what happens in the afterlife.”…

The Roman Catholic Church has been a second home for me and the community has become family. I grew up learning and building a love for the morality, compassion, teachings, discipline, support and safety that comes with being a part of the Catholic community and attending Catholic school. The Catholic traditions that I have experienced throughout my life have shaped the way I experience God now. “Scripture and Tradition are mutually related: Tradition gave birth to the Scriptures and is always necessary in order to interpret the Scriptures; the Scriptures, in turn, are the text that definitively expresses the Apostolic Tradition” (Ontario Catholic Secondary Curriculum…

As I began to develop into a teenager I began questioning my faith in God. I did not want to be confirmed into the church when I was fourteen, but my parents told me that I should at least try going to confirmation classes. I attended every confirmation class for months and at the end of confirmation classes I decided not to get confirmed. I did not think that I was ready for that kind of commitment and I was unsure about my own philosophical belief system. I think that it really hurt my parents feelings when I decided not to, but I am glad that they let me decide for myself about my own…
