Essay On Why I Chose Nursing

Since I was a child, I have enjoyed helping people feel better, whether they were sad or hurt. I believe that nursing will allow me to express my interests in helping others medically, physically, and emotionally. Nursing takes a great deal of patience and dedication and requires excellent communication skills, skills which I believe I possess. I have always enjoyed talking to people, and I am easy to talk to because I am a good listener. When patients are sick in a hospital, they need to feel like people care for them and I have found that you can do that simply by listening to what they are saying and validating their feelings. I want to use my communication skills to help people. I would like to make a difference in people’s lives, because not many people have the opportunity to do so.

After finishing the course, I was hired at a nursing home and through working there the past few months, have affirmed my desire to pursue a career in nursing. I have gained skills and feel confident in providing care to the residents of the nursing facility. There have been a variety of situations that I have been exposed to and have learned a lot from my time working in this setting. I have a strong desire to help people and working in the nursing facility has given me work experience and provided me with many learning opportunities. I know you can learn a lot by reading a text book. However, I am a firm believer that hands on experiences are far more valuable because you are given the opportunity to demonstrate the skills you have learned and care for others.
