EJ: My mother is the most dedicated person I know. Without her, I wouldn’t be speedskating today. She inspires me to never give up before the finish line of a race. J.R. Celski and Maria Garcia are my favorite skaters and have trained at the same rink I skate at today.

USS: What are your other hobbies?

EJ: When I’m not skating, I enjoy listening to Coldplay while drawing or painting. I enjoy all aspects of art. Recently, I was accepted to Orange County School of the Arts in the Visual Arts Conservatory.

USS: How did you get involved in speedskating?

EJ: When I was five, I started figure skating after I was inspired by Frozone, a superhero from The Incredibles who had the ability to freeze water and skate over it. It wasn’t until two years ago that I had encountered a banner welcoming others to try speedskating. Since there were no speedskates available in my size, my first practice was in figure skates, shaggy red knee pads, and a blue bike helmet. In October 2014, I had learned that I had developed a stress reaction in my right shin which compelled me to divert my full attention to speedskating.

My Cross Country/Track coach is one of the best men I know. He not only betters his runners by teaching us, but he also runs with us. Pushing us to greatness with words of encouragement, he implores us to leave all energy on the course/track and teaches us to be exceptional people outside of running. He expresses to us that no matter what we do, he will always be proud of each member of the team; therefore, our actions can’t change his love for us. That’s why it was devastating when he told us before the past track season, that he would not be able to coach for the remainder of the running season from February until we initiated winter conditioning November.…

On February 22, 1980, two teams hit the ice in the Olympic Center Arena, now called Herb Brooks Arena, in the small town of Lake Placid, New York. The Soviet team, made up of active duty military members and world class athletes, took on the young American team, made up of mostly college kids and amateur hockey players. The Soviets struck first with a goal which was shortly answered by the United States team. The Soviets answered with another goal and as the period was about to end, the American team snuck in another goal to tie the score up 2-2 at the end of the first period. The Russians changed goalies going into the second period and although they outshot the Americans 12-2 in the second period, the Soviets managed to only score one goal,…

The Lesson in Quitting For the past 7 years of my life, swimming has played a huge role. Growing up, I had always enjoyed being in the water, and was one of the odd kids that genuinely enjoyed swimming lessons, no bribes required (thinking about it, I wish I had some of those kids in the lessons I teach now). Overtime, it began to feel less like a passion and more like an obligation; something I had committed to that was too late to stop. I was afraid to quit, afraid to disappoint, and trying to be dedicated to a sport I had lost interest in made me start to hate it. This year, I finally decided to drop the sport, and am now embracing the huge change it has had in my life.…
