Age: 14
Club: I train at The Rinks: Lakewood Ice in Lakewood, CA. I attend races held by the Santa Clarita Speedskating Club in Valencia, CA.
Coaches: I am extremely grateful to have Kyle Uyehara and Linlin Sun as my coaches. For long track, I am coached by Sara Nielson and Ryan Shimabukuro and represent the Utah Oval Speedskating Club. Previously, I was coached by Wilma Boomstra and Derek Parra.
US Speedskating: Who inspires you in speedskating?
EJ: My mother is the most dedicated person I know. Without her, I wouldn’t be speedskating today. She inspires me to never give up before the finish line of a race. J.R. Celski and Maria Garcia are my favorite skaters and have trained at the same rink I skate at today.

I also would like to volunteer as a coach and help grow my sport since every child interested should have the opportunity to try it.
USS: What other sports do you play?
EJ: In addition to short track speedskating, I am also a figure skater and a long track speedskater.
USS: What are your other hobbies?
EJ: When I’m not skating, I enjoy listening to Coldplay while drawing or painting. I enjoy all aspects of art. Recently, I was accepted to Orange County School of the Arts in the Visual Arts Conservatory.
USS: How did you get involved in speedskating?
EJ: When I was five, I started figure skating after I was inspired by Frozone, a superhero from The Incredibles who had the ability to freeze water and skate over it. It wasn’t until two years ago that I had encountered a banner welcoming others to try speedskating. Since there were no speedskates available in my size, my first practice was in figure skates, shaggy red knee pads, and a blue bike helmet. In October 2014, I had learned that I had developed a stress reaction in my right shin which compelled me to divert my full attention to speedskating.
