When I asked my mother, Deann Bodkin, about a contemporary issue that she had a strong opinion of, she was unable to answer right away. Not being an opinionated person, she had to spend some time reflecting on her values. She realized that she had an opinion on welfare in the United States and was 'for' the regulation of welfare. My mother held a strong belief that even though not all people on welfare abuse the government assistance that they are granted, many individuals do. Her exact phrase on her stance is, "Me and several other people work hard to provide for our families. I am not against people receiving help in their lives, but I am against people using assistance for things other than living necessities. I would like to see more regulation in welfare".

She lost her job because of attendance problems and prior to even having this job she was unemployed for seven years and continued to have multiple babies. She obviously could not provide for her children without government assistance and she would constantly brag about how she made a lot of money from the government. She was an alcoholic and often was neglectful of her children. I am not saying she is a bad mother but she is bad for relying so much on government assistance, neglecting her children, and not even trying to earn money on her own. That is my strongest influence for welfare regulation because if she monitored she probably be forced to change earn her own money to provide for her
