John Lewis was born February 21, 1940. He was one of ten children. His family made their living as sharecroppers. As a child he worked alongside them tending to the crops. Lewis began to understand that there was a divide between races and he did not agree with it. He especially did not like that his family complied with the social order. He felt that Jim Crow laws did not allow blacks to reach their full potential. When his parents realized their son had the mindset to protest against the injustice that blacks were facing, they pleaded with him not to do so because they feared for his safety. Many of our grandparents lived through this time period and for them to live through it and then live in today's society we’re we no longer have to tolerate that is amazing. Knowing that they continuously fought for our equality and achieved their goal but some never got to see their goal outlived. I believe as a society we need to sit back and really appreciate the path that they paved for us. Over all I enjoyed the book I feel as though Lewis did a great job on portraying his views and thoughts to his readers. It is a great text that needs to be including within school curriculum especially during black history month. There need to be more text like this one that should be available to students so that they can learn more about themselves and what their ancestors had to go
